The controversial Devineguma Bill is set to be passed on January 8 when Parliament meets in the New Year.
Deputy Economic Development Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said several amendments would be introduced to the bill in keeping with a Supreme Court determination. The debate on the bill began on November 6 and was adjourned after Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa gave a lengthy explanation on the objectives of the bill.

The Supreme Court has determined that several clauses of the bill need to be passed by a special majority in Parliament while one clause that gives the authority to the Minister to appoint administrative zones would require the approval of the people at a referendum unless it is amended to give that appointing authority to the Cabinet of Ministers.
