A plan by Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva to close down mutton, poultry and pork stalls in Kelaniya has run into opposition with Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Prasanna Ranaweera holding a different opinion.

Minister de Silva told the Sunday Times he would seek public opinion on the matter and act accordingly.
“I will get my supporters to carry out a house-to-house survey to find out whether these shops should be closed down. The survey will start tomorrow,” Mr. Silva said.

He said people were gradually moving away from the habit of eating beef and chicken and he wanted to get the opinion of the people of Kelaniya.

However Mr. Ranaweera said the council would not give permission to close mutton, poultry and pork stalls, adding that a resolution would have to be first presented in the council.

“If these shops are to be closed other illegal activities including unauthorised liquor bars, prostitution rackets and illegal clubs should be closed down too,” Mr. Ranaweera said adding that the Pradeshiya Sabha had awarded eight tenders to operate mutton, pork and poultry shops.

He said the council had earlier stopped awarding tenders to set up beef stalls in Kelaniya.  Businessmen declined to comment adding that they would abide by the Pradeshiya Sabha decision.
