Kanneliya Man and Biosphere Reserve

Kanneliya Forest Reserve is located between Galle and Matara districts in the southern province. Visitors have to buy tickets to enter it. A guide is given to show the route and explain various things. Visitors are advised not to make unnecessary sounds or shout out because the
animals might get afraid.

The Kanneliya Forest Reserve has an extension of 530 ha. It gets rain from the south-west monsoon. The mean annual rainfall is 3750 mm and the mean monthly temperature is around 27°C. There are numerous small streams in Kanneliya.
There are birds, amphibians, butterflies, mammals, molluscs, fish and reptiles. Ubbriya, Kirihabiliya, Diyapara and Alubo are the largest trees available. A large number of medicinal plants are found in the forest reserve. They are Weniwelgata, Kudahedaya, Hathawariya, Kothalahimbutu, Rasakinda, Navandi etc.

There is a beautiful waterfall. It is named ‘Anagimala’ waterfall. The waterfall is so named in memory of a young girl who had fallen into the water and died.

The villagers living in thesurroundings are engaged in small cottage industries based on kithul palm, rattan and bamboo. Collection of bees honey and medicinal plants is a popular activity among the villagers. Kanneliya is dedicated for education research and conservation. It is a place worth visiting.
