Seminar on mid-life health

To mark the Decade of Non - Communicable Diseases, The Sri Lanka Federation of University Women (SLFUW) is organising the first seminar on Non-Communicable Diseases( NCDs) to be held on June 24 (Sunday) from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the SLFUW Resource Centre at 96/25, Kitulwatte Road (next to the British School), Colombo 8.

The seminar will include talks on the following subjects:

Painful Knee by Dr. Lalith Wijeratne; Strokes (Brain Attack) by Dr. Udaya Ranawake, Alzheimers and other Dementias by Dr. Asitha De Silva, and Diabetes by Dr. Noel Somasundaram.

The speakers will deal with the importance of early diagnosis and management of the diseases, and participants will have an opportunity to have an interactive session with the speakers. Such discussions will help greatly to dispel unfounded fears and myths.

Lester James Peries Oration on Tuesday

Senior Minister of International Monetary Cooperation Dr. Sarath Amunugama will deliver the second annual ‘Lester James Peries Oration’ on Tuesday,June 19 at the auditorium of the Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi Mandhiraya in Colombo 5. The topic of this year’s oration is “Lester James Peries: In Defence of Humanistic Cinema”. Guest of Honour on the occasion will be Prof. Phang Lai Tee, Senior Assistant Director, Audio Visual Archives of the National Archives of Singapore who will speak on “A National Archives: Importance of Audiovisual Archiving Embraces Films and Beyond”.

Festival of Choirs in Kandy today

The Festival of Choirs organized by the Ceylon Bible Society will be held at the Trinity College Chapel, Kandy at 3.30 p.m. today. Six choirs, Trinity College, Mowbray College, St. Anthony’s College Katugastota, Hillwood College, Good Shepherd Convent Kandy and Carey College, Colombo will be participating. Rt. Rev. Kumara Illangasinghe, Emeritus Bishop of Kurunegala will be the Chief Guest.
