Providing quality education is Debarawewa Central’s goal

Debarawewa Central College stands as the only National School in the Tissamaharama Education Zone in the Hambantota District. It has enriched the community by providing quality education and obtaining extraordinary results at public examinations.

Debarawewa Central was established in 1936 by then village leader Mr.D.D. Senanayake to commemorate his late son. It was firstly known as Debarawewa Vidyalaya and there were only 35 students and three teachers. In 1944 with the ideas of Dr.C.C. Kannangara, the English Government decided to establish ‘Central Colleges’, with the intention of providing Free Education to all children in Sri Lanka and in the process Debarawewa Vidyalaya too was promoted to Central College Status.

Gradually Debarawewa Central became one of the best schools which provided the largest number of students who passed G.C.E (O/L) and G.C.E (A/L) under the guidance of several principals who headed the school from time to time.

Today there are more than 2300 students getting quality education under the guidance of 85 teachers. The present principal is Mr.K.A.D. Karunarathna. The school provides many facilities to improve the knowledge of the students. The Information and Communication Technology Unit, Physical Education Unit, Library Unit and Language Unit are some of them. Moreover several organizations have been formed and their movements are conducting very useful programmes for the benefit of the school. The societies function as a platform for children who are aspiring to be leaders in the Society they live. The Cadet Corp, Environmental Corp and First Aid Unit movements give their full support to the school and society.

Since 2009, G.C.E. (O/L) section has been an asset to the school which always manages to produce extraordinary achievements with more than 72% qualifying for their Advanced Level. Also Debarawwewa C.C has produced excellent results in G.C.E.(A/L) with the help of capable graduate tutors. In 2011, three brilliant students obtained 3 A’s with high rankings. Ishara Dilhani Gamage came first in the whole island from the Commerce stream, M.L. Nissansala Lakshani came first in the Hambanthota District in the Arts stream and W. Achini Kosala was placed third in the Hambanthota District in the Commerce stream which is indeed a remarkable academic feat. In G.C.E.(A/L), annually, a large number of students enter the University.

Debarawewa C.C. has gained a reputation for their extracurricular activities too. Sport is one of the fields where these students have shone. W.G. Eranga Rashila Dulakshi, the Sri Lankan record holder of 3000m steeple chase bagged a silver medal at the Asian Junior Athletics Meet 2010 and bagged first place in the National Junior Athletics Meet 2011. Suranga Lakmal, one of Sri Lanka’s national cricket team’s fast bowlers is a past pupil of Debarawewa C.C.

The school has achieved glory in almost every sphere of activity especially in Aesthetics. They have bagged many National, Provincial level and Zonal level medals in Drama, Dancing, Music and Language Day competitions.

The College has so many societies and development programmes which gives students an opportunity to gain knowledge in various disciplines and also display their hidden talents and skills at public forum. They also give an opportunity for students to show their leadership qualities through cadetting and environmental activities while maintaining good discipline, programmes on social responsibility and community welfare is frequently implemented.

Under the guidance of the present Principal, Debarawewa C.C. reaped a huge amount of success in a life span of 76 years and shines as the best school in the zone. Paving a meaningful path to bring the school to the top in the Province is the common goal of the school administrators of.
