T-20 tourism deal to be inked this week

By Sunimalee Dias

This week Sri Lankan authorities and the International Cricket Council (ICC) are expected to finalise details on branding and the provision of local facilities for the ICC World Twenty20 tournament, which begins in September.

The ICC was given an amended agreement last Friday, sources said. The finalising comes after Sri Lanka kept the ICC waiting for more than a month. It is understood that an unanswered letter from the ICC had been lying on a desk at the Ministry of Economic Development.

At preliminary discussions, the ICC said it was providing US$12 million worth of publicity that would benefit Sri Lanka Tourism. In exchange, Sri Lanka Tourism would provide facilities for journalists covering the tournament. These would include a media centre and tours on rest days, as well as a host of activities at the Galle Face Green.

Initially describing the agreement as a “good deal”, the Ministry later said it wanted a re-evaluation. This would include a breakdown of total expenditure by Sri Lanka Tourism. Two weeks ago the re-evaluation committee said the available information was insufficient to approve the deal. The committee had already been working on the re-evaluation for a month.
