By Shamseer Jaleel

Five unanswered tries by Science College in the second half helped them to beat St. Anthony’s College Kandy by 36 points (5 Tries, 4 Conversions, 1 Drop goal) to Nil in their Singer Under20 Division 1A rugby encounter which concluded at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

At the short breather there was no scoring by both sides. The game was contested at a hectic pace with the Antonian forwards and Science three quarters battling it out. Though Science College got 2 scoring opportunities they missed through aimless penalty kicks at goal. For Antonians it was their Hooker Mohamed Ali, Fly Half Fazlar Rahman and skipper and number 8 P Angammana who stood outstanding in defense as well as in attack. But the Science three quarters too were up to their best defending very well. In attack they picked a number of holes in the Antonian defense but failed to score.

Science drew first blood in the 10th minute of the second half through a sweeping three quarter move by Centre Hashan Maduranga. Full back Prince Chamara converted to give a 7-0 lead. Science continued attacking in Antonians half and scored a superb three quarter try by Richard Dharmapala who dummied a few defenders to touch down. Prince Chamara was on target to take Science to a 14-0 lead. A few minutes later Hashan Maduranga went over for his second try.

With the game heating up a player each from both sides were yellow carded. After a few minutes of even exchanges burly Prop Forward Chathiya Saumiyakumara brushed aside some defenders to score. Chathura Gomes added the extra points. Last five minutes of the game saw full back Prince Chamara having a neat 40 meter drop goal and Richard Dharmapala’s second try.
