Salgado leads as end draws nearer

The Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2012 competition
Sajeewa Salgado who leads the All-Island category in the Bata-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2012 surpassed the 15,000 mark while Lakshan Kogagoda, who is leading the International Schools segment, managed to double his amount of votes as the competition approaches its 16th week. At the end of the 15th week the competitors remain in the positions they were in prior to the Sinhala and Hindu New Year, but the margins have expanded significantly.
It is doubtful if other contenders in the All-Island competition have the capability of giving the Thurstan skipper a good run as the closing days get nearer. The space between top-placed Salgado and his closest rival Shiran Anuruddhika is 7839, a lead that is somewhat difficult to overtake.

Anuruddhika of De Mazenod who gained the second slot a couple weeks ago from Maris Stella skipper Angelo Jayasinghe enjoys a lead of 1400 votes. Next to Jayasinghe are Royal Panadura team mates, Charith Ruchiranga and Madhawa Fernando who remain respectively at the fourth and fifth positions with a gap of 521 votes between them. Zahirian Lakshan Edirisinghe, Kavindu Ashan of Royal Panadura, Josephian Dishan Dissanayake, Peterite Thanusha Jayawardane, and Thomian skipper Sachin Peiris remain in their respective positions as from the previous week.

In the Emerging Schools category, Sasindu Perera, the St. John’s Panadura skipper managed to come out of foreseen trouble after raising his lead by 172 votes from Tharindu Guruge of President’s College Kotte. Last week the gap between the two was 47 but by this week Perera gathered momentum to safeguard his stand. Lakshan Kodagoda of Gateway topped the 31,000 mark as he maintained his stronghold in the International Schools’ category. Within a matter of weeks, Kodagoda managed to expand his lead by 11,276 votes while earning the highest amount of votes in any category this year. To make the competition more interesting readers can send in as many coupons as they wish until May 24.
