Harsha, Sukitha put Rahula on top

The inaugural big match between Rahula College Matara and Dharmapala College Pannipitiya got underway at the Uyanwatte Stadium in Matara yesterday. The opening day’s play saw Rahula College who are the hosts of the first encounter took first lease of the wicket and made 242 for 9 and declared. Dharmapala ended the day by making 63 for 2.

The highlight of day one was the 76 runs partnership for the sixth wicket between Harsha Rajapakse and Sukitha Dinushanka. Both made knocks of 40. In the morning session Rahula was given a sound start by openers Tharindu Narasinghe and Piyushan Kulatunga. This pair put on 55 runs before they were separated with the dismissal of Piyushan for 24 with five fours.

Tharindu too did not last long as he was sent back to the pavilion for the addition of 11 runs to the score having made a 29 ball knock of 32 with six boundaries. Later Vihanga Kalhara and Shehan Kahandugoda put on a brisk stand of 37 runs for the third wicket before Harsha and Sukitha combined to help them make 242. For Dharmapala Kushan Jayalath was their top wicket taker with four scalps.

Dharmapala in their turn lost their first wicket in the first ball of the innings before Ashan Jayasanka and Himasha Liyanage associated themselves with a second wicket stand of 58 to end the day on 63 for 2 from 19 overs. The match will be continued today.
