Lahiru shines on day one

By M. Shamil Amit

Lahiru Jayakody who has been in terrific form this season carried on the good work when it was needed most by making 96 and thus helped Nalanda, who were put into bat by Ananda, to make 252 for 9 declared on day one of the ‘Battle of the Maroons’ at the SSC ground. Ananda in their turn ended the day by making 72 for 2 in 21 overs.

Jayakody came to the rescue of his side when they were struggling on 114 for 6. He put on 98 runs for the seventh wicket with Pramud Hettiwatte. Lahiru’s knock comprised eight boundaries and three sixes and was unfortunate to miss out on a ton by four runs. Venuka Ashan and Sisuru Samarasinghe gave the Anandians the early break through when the duo combined effectively to send them reeling at 86 for 4.

But it was skipper Pasindu Madushan, who was unable to make any headway in the early stages of the Nalanda innings, ended with top figures of 3 for 59.
