The president of Sri Lanka is Mahinda Rajapaksa. Sri Lanka is a part of the Asian continent. Sri Lanka’s main city is Colombo. I love my country very much.

The land of gold

By Pamidu Perera (10 years), Gateway College, Rajagiriya

It was a dark night
Nobody was in sight
Like the brave and the bold
I search for a land full of gold

I travelled for years
My body turning into fears
Until I met a headless horse
That looked just like a ghost

I asked “Where is the land of gold?”
The horse said “You will find it if you are bold,
Travel through the forest of doom
Then across the lake of the black lagoon.”

The headless horse faded away
And off I set to find the way
To seek for the land full of gold

My trip to Batticaloa

By Shaun Yogeshwaran (Grade 5), Royal Institute

It was a Friday night when we left for Batticaloa. We were very tired so we slept and woke up late in the morning. We had our breakfast and went to see the beach. There were fishermen there fishing. They caught bundles of fish.

We also got into a boat to catch fish. My father, my father’s friends and I went to catch fish. They helped me to catch fish. The boat ride was fun and exciting.

Then we heard that there was a whale that reached the shore. My uncle, my cousin and I went to see it. It was huge in size and it was very long. Then the next day we went to see the Katlady Beach. The waves were beautiful and the sky was colourful. I had fun playing there for some time.

On the last day we went to see the lighthouse which was built in 1913. We also saw the bridge that was built two centuries ago by the Dutch. I felt sad to leave Batticaloa but I had to come back to Colombo. I enjoyed my trip to Batticaloa.

Despicable Me

By Dua Syed (10 years), American Int. School, Dehiwala

The movie ‘Despicable Me’ is an awesome movie. It is an animated motion picture by Steve Carell. The story is about Gru, who tries to prove that he is the ‘villainest’ villain in the whole world, by trying to steal the moon after hearing that another villain stole the Pyramid of Giza.

His plan is to get a shrink-ray gun, go to the moon, shrink it and bring it back to Earth in his own hands.
But when Victor, a sea-animal loving villain steals the shrink-ray gun, Gru adopts three girls who sell cookies. Together with the girls’ and his minions help, Gru defeats Victor and together they have lots of fun.

My favourite sportsman

By Akindu Karunaratne (Grade 5), S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia

My favourite sportsman is Jonty Rhodes. He was born on July 27, 1969. He lives in Peitermartizburg, Natal province, South Africa. He is 43 years old.

Jonty Rhodes is a former South African test and one day international cricketer who played for the South African cricket team between 1992 and 2003. As a right handed batsman he was especially noted for his extraordinary catches and fielding. Jonty Rhodes first hit the headlines in 1992 when he dived into the stumps to run out Inzamam ul-Haq of Pakistan. That was the best run out in cricket history.

Jonty retired from test cricket in 2001 and from one day cricket in 2003 after an injury during the 2003 World Cup. He also played for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club during his career.

He started to coach the South African team in 2006. After three years he started to coach Mumbai Indians as the fielding coach. He is probably the most famous South African cricketer. Jonty Rhodes is my favourite sportsman because he is a wonderful world class outstanding cricketer.
