Quintessence of making a difference

By Tahnee Hopman

What do popular bands Battery, Doctor and Nemesis have in common? Apart from the obvious, a passion for making a positive impact one step at a time.

The impact of ‘Quintessence’- the first concert where the three bands will perform together- will be for the students of the School for the Deaf and Blind in Ratmalana. Organized by the Rotaract Club of the Achievers Lanka Business School (ALBS), the concert will take place on February 24 at the Bishop’s College Auditorium from 7.30pm onwards. The proceeds from Quintessence will be channeled towards the purpose of donating new tables and chairs to be used by the students of the school.

“As the word Quintessence suggests, this initiative stems from the notion of trying to make life for these children ‘the most perfect of its type’ in whatever way we can,” explains Chauka Piyasiri, the Director of Club Service for the Rotaract Club. “We may not be able to charge in and completely change their lifestyle but hopefully we can at least make a start.”

This is what Rotaract is all about for the members of the Rotaract Club: the change that is achievable when a group of people pools its talents and decides the best possible way to use them. The belief that despite the challenges which would arise, there is always something that one group of individuals can do to help another.

The club is now in its second year, with many successful projects to its credit. “We really look forward to making the concert a success,” concludes Chanuka. “Hopefully in even a small way we could make a change; make life easier and more comfortable for the students,” he continues. “After all life is for living, so why not live it well?”

Quintessence also features TNL Onstage Winner SAM, The Castaways and When-In-June.

Tickets for Quintessence priced at Rs. 700 will be available at the Achievers Campus, Bambalapitiya and the Achievers Lanka Business school in Kohuwela.
