Small and sweet

Aanya Wipulasena drops by the mini doughnut stall at Majestic City to discover that good things do come in small sizes

They are doughnuts with an attitude but don’t be put off by its size. Made in a mini doughnut machine and served with a variety of toppings - the mini disc sized doughnuts with their distinct cinnamon taste are small but heavenly.

Tucked away in a corner of the food court at Majestic city the ‘Lil’ Orbits’ outlet is an American franchise, where these tiny doughnuts are made using a special American recipe which, unlike the large frosted donuts you come across, these are much smaller but soft and moist. The outlet is open everyday from 10 am to 9 pm.

Attention to detail is crucial in the creation of these tiny, bite-sized doughnuts as they are flipped several times over till golden brown and then sprinkled with sugar, ready to be served. This process takes place right in front of you, while you wait to get your bag of goodies, letting you witness how the delicious sweeties are made. The owners tell us that every little ingredient except for the sugar is imported.

“People ask me why the doughnuts are so small and I tell them if the taste is there the size doesn’t matter,” says Nipuna with a smile. And true enough, its distinct taste is addictive and its size just makes it all the cuter.

Even though Lil’ Orbits is a new name to Sri Lanka it has been in the mini doughnut industry since 1975 and has sold over 12 billion of them ever since.

The two people who brought the franchise to Colombo are Nipuna Jayathilake and Angajan Ramanadan who come from completely different backgrounds - where the first owns his own export company and the latter is an engineer.

A soft launch of Lil’ Orbits in December last year saw many flocking to its outlet and they plan an official launch towards the end of this month adding two other products to the menu. Nipuna also said they are hoping to open four more outlets in Kollupitiya, Fort, Negombo and Nugegoda.

You could buy a set of 12 doughnuts for Rs. 180 and a bucket of 30 for Rs. 380. A cup of dipping sauce for Rs. 30.
