Royal Institute of Colombo now offers Deakin University Degrees

Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC) the Affiliate Centre of the University of London has well over 20 years experience in teaching for University of London Degrees under the International Programme of the University of London and has produced thousands of graduates. It currently offers 15 Degrees of the University of London in the areas of Finance, Economics, Accounting, Banking, Business, International Relations, Law, Management, Mathematics and Sociology. It also offers Diplomas in Economics, Law and Social Sciences.

In order to further expand its portfolio of Degree courses RIC has got affiliated with the Deakin University in Australia to offer their Bachelor Degree courses Engineering, Information Technology, Science and Biomedical Science. Under this programme RIC is scheduled to commence these courses in March 2012.

Established in the 1970s, Deakin University is one of Australia’s largest universities with more than 36,000 students from more than 137 countries around the world. The university operates from four campuses – one in Melbourne, two in Geelong and one in Victoria all of which offers students access to excellent teaching, learning and research experience. A member of universities in Australia and Association of Commonwealth Universities, Deakin has won the prestigious Australian university of the year award twice and has also won global recognition for innovation and excellence.

Deakin’s broad range of courses include general degrees such as Arts and Science professional degrees in Architecture, Business Management, Medicine, Law, Engineering, Information Technology, Nursing, Teaching and Phycology as well as specialist disciplines like Sport Environment and Nutrition etc. Additionally it also offers several Masters programmes.

There is plenty of scope for specialization in the Engineering degrees which covers a vast range of disciplines from Civil, Mechanical, Mechatronics and Robotic engineering. Engineering education is closely allied to industry as the courses provide the opportunity for work experience in industry for one year and you will solve problems faced by professional engineers in the work place. RIC will introduce the Deakin University Engineering degree on a 2 + 2 basis where students will undertake common subjects in the first two years of the four year course before choosing to specialize in Civil, Mechanical or Mechatronics and Robotics and at the end of 2 years proceed to Deakin University for the final 2 years. Deakin’s Bachelor of Engineering will provide you with broad theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience to build a successful career in a range of fields. Deakin engineering graduates have been employed by a range of top companies such as – Alcoa, Barwon Water, Boeing, Ford, Godfrey Hurst, Harrop Engineering, Hatch Associates, Holder (General Motors), Industrial Control Technology Pty Ltd, Kempe Engineering, Melbourne.

Deakin university’s Bachelor of Information Technology Programmes feature Industry Based Learning which is integrated into the courses ranging from individual or group industry projects to full trimester placements which enable them to get employment immediately after graduation. These students have undertaken placements in large international companies such as IBM, Coles Group as well as in companies such as Utelosystems and BCC computers. This Degree course is conducted on a 2 + 2 basis where the first two years of study will be at RIC where students would go through the study of a core set of Information Technology units and the balance two years will be at Deakin University in Australia. Selected units will be delivered by RIC and provide a pathway enabling RIC students to complete the Degree at Deakin University in Australia. Students will have the option of majoring in Computer Science, Security or in Software Development.

In the case of Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Biomedical Science Degrees the basis is one year of studies at RIC where students go through the core modules at the end of which having obtained credit towards the Degree on successful completion, students proceed to Deakin in Australia where they will study on-campus for the balance two years and complete the Degree.

Reading for a Deakin University Degree at Royal Institute of Colombo during the initial year(s) and continuing and completing the selected Degree in Australia at Deakin University would be extremely cost-effective as a substantial part of studies could be undertaken at RIC in Sri Lanka and yet obtain the special advantages of a globally recognized qualification closely allied to industry which also provides opportunities for work experience in industry with prospects of employment immediately after graduation.

Upon successful completion of the prescribed number of units at RIC maintaining a minimum of 55% grade average, students will be eligible to articulate into the courses at Deakin with credit for prior learning. Such students should undertake relevant additional units as full-time on-campus students of Deakin in Australia and on successful completion of the units at Deakin, students will be awarded the Degree applicable to the course undertaken.

Admission requirements for the RIC programme are 3 credit passes at Sri Lankan A/Levels or 6 points in UK A/Levels (points are determined on the Grades obtained – 5 points for a pass with Grade ‘A’, 4 for Grade ‘B’, 3 for Grade ‘C’ and 2 for Grade ‘D’. Students who meet these admission requirements are eligible for admission into the RIC programme and once admitted they are expected to be full-time on-campus students for them to study RIC units.

There are many unique advantages in following the Deakin University Degree programme offered by Royal Institute of Colombo which is kept up-to-date with what is being taught at the Deakin University itself. In pursuance of quality assurance, Deakin University determines the content of the units offered in the programme, monitors and maintains academic standards, evaluates the units and provides a Deakin academic staff member as co-ordinator of the RIC programme and to periodically visit RIC for quality assurance purposes. Thus the delivery of the RIC units will be constantly monitored by Deakin to ensure that our programme is upto the right standard they have set.

Under the Deakin University Programme, RIC units will be delivered by the competent academic staff using Deakin’s materials on a full-time on-campus basis. Deakin will also provide advice and assistance to the academic staff of Royal Institute of Colombo delivering the RIC units through Deakin Studies on line or other appropriate means which will keep them updated.

Royal Institute of Colombo, on its part, provides state-of-the-art facilities and other resources for its students to go through a rich educational experience. The automated Library, which is one of the best available in Sri Lanka, will have an extensive collection of books relating to all fields of study in the Deakin Degree programme. RIC will also provide appropriate computing facilities to enable students to undertake the RIC units of the Deakin programme. The highly qualified and experienced lecturers will provide students with advice, counseling and administrative assistance.
