It is a truism that English is the key to success in both professional and academic spheres today. The need for a high competency in English in professionals, has been highlighted by several key factors in the present environment. Among them the prime factor is that English has become the language of the globalized competitive business environment. The course Diploma in English for Professionals has been tailored to improve English language competency of the professionals from a novel approach. The course runs for one year in three semesters. The course is taught mainly in five main modules; speaking skills, business writing skills, grammar for effective speaking and writing, reading skills for language development and listening skills. The main objective of the course is to develop the English language competency of the participants to be effective and confident in using the language at work, in their academic and personal lives. The course materials are constantly up dated to mirror the latest development of the English language. A participant who receives the diploma at the end of course does not carry just another certificate, but carries the confidence and pride of being able to speak effectively at any occasion and write at a professional level for business or academical purposes. The Business Presentation Skills, Public Speaking Skills and Speaking Skills for A Business Environment are some of the unique modules where the participants will train themselves to speak fluently in English, in classroom simulations of the actual occasion.
The course Diploma in English for Professionals (DEP) is offered at the Colombo main campus of NIBM and also at the regional centres in Galle, Kurunegala and Kandy. Professionally and an academically well qualified staff with post graduate qualification in teaching English facilitates learning in the course. The learning sessions are conducted in modern state-of-the art lecture rooms where learning becomes a rewarding experience for the participants. The course is run both on Sundays and weekday evenings to enable the participants to choose a time slot which best suits their busy day-to-day schedules.
