Slimline BC retain national boxing title

Defending champions Slimline BC retained the national boxing title when they emerged as the top team at the 85th ABA National Boxing Championship concluded at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday.

The defending champions who won the national title for the fifth time had seven of their pugilists in the final and though being able to win only three bouts it was enough for them to retain the title for yet another year.

The successful boxers from the champion team were R.T. Jayatileke, Asanka Rajapakse and P.D. Suresh who won the middleweight under 75kgs, welterweight under 69kgs and the flyweight under 49kgs bouts.

Their closest rivals Army who had four boxers in the final also succeeded in winning three bouts through R.G.P.P. Rathnage (super heavyweight over 91kgs), W.R.T. Weerakkody (bantamweight under 56kgs) and W.A.C.I. Perera (light flyweight under 49kgs).

Meanwhile the MAS Southern ‘A’ team bagged the champions title in the women’s category. They had three winners from the four that figured in the final.

T.D.N.T. Jayakody of the Air Force was adjudged the Best Boxer in the men’s category with Sisira Kumarasinghe of Navy taking Best Loser’s prize. Sri Lanka national boxer Nilmini Jayasinghe of MAS Southern ‘A’ carried away the Best Boxer’s in the women’s category with P.K. Sumudu of Army ‘A’’ taking the Best Loser’s award.

Apart from that, two other separate awards were presented for the most outstanding boxer for the year 2011 which was won by P.D. Suresh of Slimline BC while Army was adjudged the best boxing team of 2011.
