Christmas Day

By Anjalee Dilshi, (Grade 6), Sujatha Vidyalaya, Nugegoda

Christmas is a festival which falls in the month of December. Christians celebrate this festival on a grand scale. They commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ who was one of the greatest teachers in the world.

Christmas brings hope to every person. People are cheerful and shops are blazing with lights on Christmas Eve. There are turkey, geese, piles of oranges, apples, nuts, cakes and sweets – though not
everyone has the money to buy them.

Little children believe that a special person named ‘Santa Claus’, will come to their houses and deliver gifts at midnight, so they make Christmas trees. Different authorities get together and collect money to give a bit of comfort to the poor.

People decorate their houses with holly, ivy and mistletoe. Children sing Christmas carols and they dress in honour of Christmas. In foreign countries, snow falls and it is very cold. Little children like to make snowmen.

There may be poverty or wealth, but the sound of church bells gives a new message;
“Merry Christmas Everyone!”

My country

My country is Sri Lanka. It is an island.
It is surrounded by the Indian Ocean.
There are lots of mountains, rivers, lakes and ponds. The main crops in Sri Lanka are, tea, rubber and coconut. There are four main
religions and there are Buddhists, Christians, Hindus and Muslims.
The capital of Sri Lanka is
Sri Jayewardhanapura Kotte. The president of my country is Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Sri Lanka is a beautiful country and I am glad to be a Sri Lankan.

My days as a Grade 4 student

By Dayan Samarasinghe (Grade 4), S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia

It was fun being a Grade 4 student. My teacher was Mrs. F. R. Cassim. She was very kind and like a
mother to us. In my class there were 32 pupils and all of them were my friends.

My class had a lot of charts. My teacher treated all of us equally. My teacher taught us Maths, ERA, Sinhala and English. My favourite subject was ERA. We did many ERA activites together. We went to Pinnawala and the Peradeniya Gardens.

We were all like one family and I will never forget my stay as a Grade 4 student.

Looking forward to the holidays

By Kumal Udamulla (10 years), Gateway College

I was lying in my bed thinking of where we would go for the holidays. Then I heard a sound from upstairs. I went to investigate. It was my mum packing our bags. “Where are we going mum?” I asked. “We are going to Trincomalee,” answered mum.

Trincomalee is situated in the northwest of Sri Lanka and it has a beach too. I love beaches because they have the most, wavy water and we can make sandcastles. Lastly we can sail in my father’s feel free boat. We packed and tied the boat to the hood top.

We set off on our journey. It took a long, long, long time to get there. On the way we played games like counting cars. When we got there the first thing we saw was the light blue coral beach. Then we were given a fresh juice from the hotel. I almost forgot to tell you that the name of the hotel was Nilaveli Beach Hotel.

The next morning we ran to our feel free boat and paddled to the sea. Then we went to the Pigeon Island. We got into the sea and swam. Then I found out that it was a mini lagoon. After swimming we went back to the hotel and then came home. I would like to go to Trinco again.
