Alleged criminals killed in shootout with police

The Middeniya police said two young men who were shot dead yesterday were believed to have been involved in several crimes in the area.

According to the police, they had surrounded a house in the Divuampitiya area in Middeiya on Friday night and called on the inmates to surrender. When the inmates opened fire the police had no option but to return fire.

According to police reports the two were killed in the shootout. Police later recovered two T 56 weapons and a magazine from the scene. One is a resident of Middeniya while the other is a resident of Sevenagala.
