Where is our Snowman?

By Manoshi de Silva

It was Christmas time. The days were cold and frosty. It snowed for a few days and the field was covered in a thick white blanket of snow. A few kids were playing in the snow. The cold was biting into them but that didn’t stop them. “Let’s build a Snowman!” said one kid. “Let’s bring things to make him look real!”, shouted another kid running back home. “I’ll bring a carrot for his nose!” “And I’ll bring two plums for his eyes,”

shouted another. “I’ll bring a scarf and hat.” “Let’s fix half an apple as his mouth!” Once the children brought everything they needed, they started to collect snow. They piled it up like a little mountain. Then they made a small snow ball on top and finished making the Snowman by fixing the eyes, nose and mouth. Then they put the hat on his head and the scarf around his neck.

Suddenly it started to snow again. The children ran home turning back and looking at the handsome Snowman they just built. After the field turned quiet, a few rabbits hopped about in search of food. “Look! Look!” they shouted. “A Snowman has come to the field.” The birds and the squirrels peeped from the branches. “What a jolly looking fellow he is!” they said. “It is going to be a
wonderful Christmas with this new visitor,” said the mice. They all played and danced around him. They
all had so much of fun. Little by little it started to get dark. “Let’s go and get
some sleep!” said the
animals. “The Snowman will stay right here.

We can play again with him tomorrow.” “Goodnight Snowman,” shouted a small snow-white rabbit. “Don’t go anywhere!”

Then next morning on Christmas Eve, they all got up as early as they could to play with the Snowman. It was colder than the day before. They ran around in search of food. Once they were full, they felt warm and happy. “Let’s find our friend the Snowman and play with him!” shouted the rabbits. They all looked around, but they couldn’t find him. “Maybe he has gone home!” said a small mouse. “Don’t be silly! He is a Snowman. He lives in the snow,” said a bird. They looked all over for the Snowman but they couldn’t find him.

It was a tiny squirrel who found Snowman’s scarf covered with snow. His hat has fallen a little distance away. “Something terrible has happened!” cried the animals. “Has someone
kidnapped him?” they looked around for clues. The rabbits hopped on a mound of snow and then they realized that the snow pile was the Snowman. “Someone has pushed him down!” cried a baby
rabbit. But wait! There were some strange marks.

“These marks are made by horse-shoes and those are made by cart wheels. A horse carriage must have knocked him down in the dark!” shouted a mouse. All the animals felt very sad without their friend.
“Why do you look so sad?” asked a fawn. “He was made of snow. So why won’t you build him again?” “Yes, that’s what we should do! Let’s make him again!” shouted the animals.

“I remember what he looked like,” said the fawn.”He had a carrot for a nose. Find the carrot!” A little bunny rabbit looked at the others meekly. “I didn’t know it was his nose. I ate it when I found it in the morning. I was quite surprised there was such a fine carrot in the snow!” everyone sighed and shook their heads.
“What about his eyes – the ripe plums and his mouth – the apple?” asked the fawn. “I ate a piece of apple. I am not sure if it was his mouth…” said a rat. “We ate the plums,” said two little birds, looking very guilty. The fawn sighed. “Now, how do we build him again?”

“Let’s try and use whatever we have with us,” said a rabbit. So they all ran in to their homes in search of things. The squirrel brought two acorns. Those were perfect for a pair of eyes. The rabbits brought a turnip. It was a little dry but good enough for a nose. The mice brought a piece of cheese. “This doesn’t look much like a mouth but I guess this will have to do,” said a mouse. And so they all got together and made the Snowman again. Then they put the scarf around his neck and the hat on his head.

The rabbits, mice, squirrels and the little fawn all sat together around the Snowman and stared at him happily. Then a strange thing happened. There was a magical feeling in the frosty air.

The Snowman started to feel the love of the friends who put him back together. Although he was made of snow he felt warm inside. A cold wind blew across the field spraying snowflakes all over the
evergreen trees, decorating the trees with glistening snow crystals.

The Snowman’s acorn eyes sparkled and his mouth spread into a smile. “Look! Look! Our Snowman has come alive!” they all shouted. “Merry Christmas, Mr. Snowman!” The Snowman happily smiled at all his friends. “A very merry Christmas to you too!”
