Chamara, Farveez and Angelo guide NCC to title

Premier Tier ‘A’ Limited Over Final
By M. Shamil Amit

Chamara Kapugedera along with Farveez Maharoof and Angelo Perera guided NCC to emerge champions of the the Premier Tier ‘A’ limited tournament. The trio laid the foundation for a 32 run win over SSC in the final at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday.

They made useful contributions to help NCC who were invited to take first lease of the wicket by SSC skipper Thilina Kandamby to make a formidable 268 and then the bowlers combined effectively to restrict SSC to 236.

Chamara top scored with a 56 ball knock of 64 which had five boundaries and two sixes while Farveez hit 52 in 78 balls with six boundaries. Angelo’s contribution was 41 from 36 balls that comprised a boundary and two sixes.

Farveez and skipper Upul Tharanga who opened the innings gave NCC a fairly good start putting on 40 runs which was followed by another 44 runs stand for the second wicket between Farveez and Yohan de Silva.

Farveez was involved in another useful partnership of 41 runs with Chamara before departing. At this stage NCC were sitting pretty at 125 for 3 in the 27th over. From there on Angelo who has become a reliable middle order batsman took over as he too was associated in two fruitful partnerships.

Together with Imesh Udayanga he added 31 runs for the seventh wicket and followed it up with another 31 runs stand for the eighth wicket with Thilina Thushara which propelled the NCC score.

For SSC spinners Sachitra Senanayake and Kaushal Lokuarachchi along with pacie Charith Jayampathi were the successful bowlers with the trio sharing eight wickets between them.SSC in their run chase made a shaky start and later were made to struggle for their runs. Despite making a recovery through a fourth wicket stand of 109 runs between skipper Thilina Kandamby and Kaushal Lokuarachchi they were unable to make any headway. With the duo’s dismissal SSC lost wickets at regular intervals and a brief stand of 45 runs for the ninth wicket between Charith Jayampathi and Sachitra Senanayake only delayed an early win for NCC.

NCC 268 in 49.5 overs (Chamara Kapugedera 64, Farveez Maharoof 52, Angelo Perera 41, Kosala Kulasekera 27, Upul Tharanga 24, Yohan de Silva 16: Sachitra Senanayake 3 for 46, Charith Jayampathi 3 for 48, Kaushal Lokuarachchi 2 for 46)

SSC 236 in 47.2 overs (Thilina Kandamby 64, Kaushal Lokuarachchi 52, Charith Jayampathi 31, Bhanuka Rajapakse 25, Sachitra Senanayake 17: Jehan Mubarak 2 for 32, Thilina Thushara 2 for 41, Farveez Maharoof 2 for 42)
