Night racing invades Colombo

Mean machines invaded the roads of Colombo yesterday as the inaugural Colombo Night Race hotted up in the heart of the commercial capital. The racing drivers and riders of Sri Lanka got the opportunity of taking off on their hot rods in Colombo at competition level.

The qualifying rounds were held on Friday night and the drivers and riders with the best timing in their respective events were determined the grid position on the final day yesterday. The 1.5 kilometre course was redone especially for the big race, which hit Colombo almost after five decades.

Seventeen grueling motorcycle and car events were conducted amidst the presence of a large number of spectators which dragged on until the wee hours of dawn today. Most of the events held were categorized according to the make and strength of the vehicles.. The event line up comprised of separate races for Nissan March, Laser/Mazda 1300cc, Mini 7, Lazer/Mazda 1500cc, SL A Cars up to 1050cc, Formula Mclarens, VW Polo, SL H Cars up to 1600cc, Formula Ford, SL GT up to 3500cc and an international event, the GT4 Cars categories. In addition to the cars seven motorcycle events were lined up.
