Int’l conference on Social Sciences and Humanities

The Faculty of Arts of the University of Peradeniya will hold an International Conference on the Social Sciences and the Humanities on December 16-17 at the Faculty of Arts. The theme of the conference is "Knowledge Society or Knowledge for Society: Social Sciences and Humanities in 21st Century Sri Lanka".

The conference will feature four eminent and distinguished keynote speeches by Jayantha Dhanapala (President, Pugwash Conferences for Science and World Affairs and Deputy Chairman, Governing Board of Stockholm International Peace Research Institute), Prof. Savitri Goonesekera (Emeritus Professor of Law, University of Colombo) , Prof. Gishan Dissanaike (Adam Smith Professor of Corporate Governance, University of Cambridge) and Dr. Pradeep Jeganathan (Senior Consultant Social Anthropologist, Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies).

There will be around 60 papers, including around 15 from overseas contributors, across a wide variety of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities that will be presented at this conference. Annual National Conference on Buddhist Studies

The 7th Annual National Conference on Buddhist Studies organised by The Dept. of Pali and Buddhist Studies, University of Sri Jayewardenapura in association with The Buddhist Times Trust will be held at the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Sri Jayewardenapura on December 17 and 18.

The Chief Guest will be Ven. Professor Ittademaliye Indasara Thera, Vice Chancellor, Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka. Professor G.A. Somaratne, Rector, Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy (SIBA), Co-Director, Dhammachai Tipitaka Project, Thailand will deliver the inaugural address: 'Pali Philology: A Way Forward for Buddhist Studies in Sri Lanka'.

Registration commences at 8. a.m. on Saturday the 17th. The conference is open to members of the public.

Vinitha Karunaratne's book launch

'Another Rose in the Garland', Vinitha Karunaratne's second book will be launched today at the Galadari Hotel.

"International Christmas Charity Bazaar 2011" at Mount Lavinia Hotel

The Mount Lavinia Hotel will host the annual International Christmas Charity Bazaar (ICCB), today, December 11. Over 30 stalls will be set up in this year's event, offering the ICCB visitors a unique shopping experience.

Shoppers will find holiday & home décor, handmade crafts, festive food, Christmas carols, DJ entertainment, Beer Garden, Beach BBQ, fun activities for kids and many more. A Double Decker shuttle service will also be available for all visitors from BMICH to Mount Lavinia. For more information on the shuttle service, refer to the facebook page ICCB Colombo. The activities at the hotel will kick off at 11.00am. The stalls will be opened from 2.00pm-5.00pm.

Entrance tickets are priced at Rs 500 and all proceeds will go to the Father Pillai Scholarship Fund and Community Concern Society.

Galadari, all abuzz for Christmas

With the festive season in full swing the Galadari hotel will be abuzz for Christmas. The magic of Christmas comes alive at the hotel's premier fine dining rooftop restaurant the California Grill, which provides the perfect five course set menu dinner.

There will be traditional Arabian hospitality at the Sheherezade 's Arabic themed Buffet on Christmas Eve.
