Badulla Viharamahadevians take gigantic strides in education and other activities

Badulla Viharamahadevi Balika Maha Vidyalaya is a reputed girls’ school in the Uva Province. It has a long remarkable history spanning nearly 100 years and plays a major role in the educational achievements in the province. The students are inculcated with the Sri Lankan way of life, high discipline, unstinted dedication, and possess excellent character.

Principal Mrs. Hema Wijekoon

This school was established in the year 1914 as a Catholic school. It was named Ursula’s Convent and their task was to provide education to the Catholic girls in the area. In 1962 the school was taken over by the government and was established as a primary girls’ school.

They named the school Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya. The Tamil medium students were shifted to Badulla Tamil Girls School and from that day Viharamahadevi started functioning as a Buddhist girls’ school. In 1972 they got permission to start grade nine classes. In 1978 the first batch sat for the G.C.E. (O/L) examination and got excellent result. In 1980 it became the Viharamahadevi Balika Maha Vidyalaya. At present the school shelters over 2200 Viharamahadevians enjoying educational facilities and are guided by a staff of about 120 teachers devoted to the task of providing knowledge and skills. They assist the pupils in the development of aptitudes and attitudes that are a prerequisite to character building and good citizenship. The present principal is Mrs. Hema Wijekoon.

Badulla Viharamahadevi Balika M.M.V. has maintained excellent records in both academic and non-academic fields. G.C.E.(O/L) has always brought them a very high success and nearly 78% of them have qualified for ‘A’ Levels.

The new Advance Level Arts Classes were started in 1980 and the Commerce stream was inaugurated in 1989. A student of the first batch of the commerce steam brought great academic success to the school by obtaining 309 marks and with it the President’s Award. Since then so many Viharamahadevi students have entered the Universities while the rest have procured jobs in private and government sectors. The science stream was started in 2002. In 2009 Poornima Indrachapa Yasanayake obtained the 1st rank in Badulla district and at present she is a Law Faculty student.

Grade 5 scholarship examinations always bring in the highest credit to the school. In 1989 a student of grade five got 195 marks and was placed 3rd in the Island. In 2009 Maheshi Vihansa Sirimanna was 2nd in the Island and this year (2011) 71 students got through the examination successfully.

Badulla Viharamahadevi Balika M.M.V. students have shone not only in studies but also in sports, Dance, music and scouting as well. They have shown their talents in various areas. The obtained first and second place at the recent All Island Competition in Cake Decoration. This is the best example for it. They have won so many first and second places at the All Island Eastern and Western music competitions too. In 2010 Vishala Gunathilake won 2nd place in the All Island Violin Competition. The school dancing group took first place at the All Island competition held in 2010. Niroda Vimukthi is a very good debating star from this school and she won 3rd place at the All Island Debating Competition this year (2011).

The English Unit is successful with a well organized English Activity Team. The Junior and senior drama troop won the second and first places respectively in the Provincial English Day competition this year. The “Udarata” dancing group has consecutively been in the first place in the Uva Province.
The Viharamahadevi students have shone also in Language day, Art, Band competitions and has brought Provincial and National level medals to the school.Sport is another area where the Viharamahadevi B.M.V. students have done well.

They have excelled in provincial and national level championships with many victories. The under 15 carom team won the All Island Championship in 2010 and the under 19 team won the championship in 2011. Chess and Netball are the other sports they are famous for and has gained so many provincial victories. Shriyalatha Kaushalya was placed 3rd in 5000 meters at the National Youth Athletics Meet.The school has taken giant strides within its long history to enter the portals of prestige to reach great heights and carve its name in the plaque of achievements as a leading girls’ school in Uva province.
