Heriot-Watt University ranked 27 in UK 2011/12

Heriot-Watt University (HWU) is one of the UK’s leading universities for business and industry and has a reputation for innovative education, enterprise and leading edge research in science, business, engineering and design. Heriot-Watt has been named as Scottish University of the Year 2011/12 in the Sunday Times University Guide.

The Award was made on the basis of Heriot-Watt’s innovation, teaching excellence and research as well as first-rate facilities, the employability of the University’s graduates and of recent successes in the National Student Survey (NSS), Improved results in the National Student Survey (NSS), excellent graduate employment statistics and first-rate facilities all contribute to the Sunday Times University Guide award.

Heriot-Watt graduates are very employable. Heriot Watt University ratings as per Guardian University Guide League table 2012
Heriot-Watt moved up the Guardian University Guide 2012 league table to 27th out of 119 UK institutions.

The 2012 Guardian rankings released, assessed 119 Universities in UK on factors such as teaching quality, spending per student, staff-student ratio and career prospects. Heriot Watt’s overall position in the ranking has risen from 32nd in 2010/11 to 27th in 2011/2012.

The Guide, which also ranks universities by subject, placed Heriot Watt:
-2nd in the UK for Chemistry,
-4th for Economics,
-5th for Psychology,
-11th for Chemical Engineering,
-13th for Mechanical Engineering, and
-16th in the UK for Business and Management related programmes

Heriot-Watt’s Chemistry and Economics degrees have been ranked No.1 in Scotland by the Guardian newspaper university league table. Psychology and Art & Design were rated 2nd in Scotland.

Heriot-Watt also moved up the student survey ladder this year. Students at Heriot-Watt are very satisfied with their courses. Heriot-Watt has considerably improved its position to 29th out of 120 UK universities in the 2011 National Student Survey (NSS), up from 47th last year. Chemical Engineering at Heriot-Watt came top in the UK, with Chemistry second and Civil Engineering fourth. Each of these, along with Psychology were top in Scotland, and in all, nine subject areas were ranked in the top ten UK-wide.
This is great news for students who choose to study at the Heriot-Watt University International Approved Learning Partners. The Undergraduate Certificate in Engineering leads to a degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Civil Engineering, whilst the Undergraduate Certificate in Business and Management leads to a BSc Psychology or BSc Psychology and Management.

This year the NSS also included a new weighted comparison of universities’ ratings for Overall Satisfaction with what would be expected of different institutions in terms of their subject mix and the composition of their student bodies, areas which affect NSS results. Under this new system Heriot-Watt outperforms its benchmark by four percentage, coming joint second in Scotland and joint twelfth in the UK.

Meanwhile another recent league table, the Independent’s Complete University Guide ranked Heriot-Watt’s Art & Design and Mathematics programmes 2nd in Scotland. Heriot-Watt was rated 4th in Scotland as per Independent’s Complete University Guide
