100 dogs imported for Police kennels

By L. B. Senaratne

The Sri Lanka Police have imported 100 dogs for their Kennel Headquarters in Kandy.
The dogs come from the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands, each costing about Rs. 850,000. The animals arrived in two batches, one on November 5, the other on November 20.

The dogs were selected by Dr. Asokh Dangolle, of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Peradeniya. Dr. Dangolle was accompanied by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sisira Weerakoon, of the Police Kennels at Asgiriya, Kandy. The animals were chosen from around 240 animals at dog breeding farms in the three countries.

Dr. Dangolle told the Sunday Times that most of the dogs would be trained in crime detection, including the detection of narcotic drugs.
