Reaching for the stars

ASTERIA – the female choral group are set to reach for the stars with ‘Mosaic 2011’ a show that will feature contemporary, classical and pop choral arrangements.

The evening will feature performances by the Cantabile School of Singing, and professionals of the calibre of Rukshan Perera as well as Gananath Dassanayaka and friends will also showcase their talents at the event.

ASTERIA consists of young women from all walks of life, with some still in school while others are employed professionals. “It can be hard to fit choir practices into our busy schedules, but all of us have worked together at some point, and that attachment keeps the choir alive,” says a member of the choir.
Founded two years ago, members of ASTERIA, participated in the All- Island Choral Competition held by the Institute of Western Music and Speech last year, and emerged champions of the open category as well as proud winners of the coveted ‘Best Overall Performance’.

Taking on from these victories, the next big aspiration for the group was to host a concert of their own. ‘Mosaic 2011’, came to life with that notion and promises to be an evening filled with choral arrangements that will touch the musical personality within each and every one. Fun, frolic and laughter surround the girls as they practice hard to make sure that MOSAIC 2011, will be a memorable experience.

“The victories at the Choral Competition have fuelled our motivation, and I know what it means for young people to achieve such feats,” said Mahen Peiris, a professional in the music field, with vast years of experience under his belt. He is also the founder of the female vocal group along with his wife Prashalini Peiris.

MOSAIC is directed by Mahen Peiris, and will be held on Sunday, December 4 at 7.00 pm in the British School Auditiorium. Tickets are priced at Rs. 1000. 750 and 500 (Reserved) and Rs.300 (Balcony).
