Quality education at Uva Science College

By Sujitha Miranda

Uva Science College is a Navodya Model School which is situated in the Badulla District, Hali-ela. It is a as a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual mixed school controlled by the Uva Provincial Council.

Principal H.S.P.Pieris (SLPS 21)

In accordance with the Provincial policy of establishing a model school in the province and sponsored by the “Uva Navodaya Scholarship Fund” the Uva Science College (Model School) was ceremonially declared open by the Governor of the province of Uva,  Ananda Dassanayake on the invitation of the chief Minister of the education of the province of Uva, Percy Samaraweera and with the participation of members of parliament and members of the Uva Provincial Council on January 6,1997 with 97 students and 8 teachers. The first principal was Mr.R.M.P.Rathnayaka, the present Provincial Educational Director.

Primary education was not established in this school. At first they selected students for grade 7 classes, from low income families and those who got through the grade 5 scholarship examinations. All the students were admitted to the school hostel and none of them were allowed to travel from home. And there were only two grade 7 classes. Later on, a Tamil medium class was also started.

But, from 1999 the Provincial Council decided to stop new admissions. Only the previously admitted students were allowed to continue their studies till their G.C.E (O/L) as 2001 and 2002 O/L batches. These batches got 100% result at the G.C.E. (O/L).

As the result the school reopened on January 22, 2003 by the former Uva Chief Minister Buddhadasa on an order from former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaranatunge. From that day, they started admitting not only the low income students but also the children of Government employees for grade six classes after their grade 5 scholarship examination. None of the staff children including principal’s go to any other schools in the province. This is the best example they have shown to prove the quality of education that they provide.

At present there are nearly 900 students and 65 teachers under the guidance of the present principal Mr. H.S.P. Pieris (SLPS 2 I) who was a former science teacher of the same college from the day it was established. Nearly 120 students enroll at the schoolyearly by inviting applications through newspaper advertisements inserted by the Provincial Secretary.

“Glory with Pluralism...” is the vision and “for a Wise society with social integrity; to bring up educated and disciplined children to Uva Province” is the Mission of Uva Science College. 100% in G.C.E.(O/L) collective result is the common goal of Uva Science College. “Not a single child should fail the Examination” is the aim of the dedicated lot of teachers. Since 2002 they have proved that by their results. Since 2002, they enjoyed 100% results in all three mediums.

New Advanced Level Classes were started in 2009 in the Science Stream in both Sinhala and English Medium. Though they have obtained permission for the Tamil Medium Advanced Level classes from the Zonal Education Department, they were not able to start Tamil A/L classes due to lack of qualified teachers to teach science stream subjects in Tamil. In 2011 the first Advanced level batch sat for the Examination.

The teaching method of this school is different from other government schools. They start the school at 7 O’clock and they work nine periods up to 2 O’clock. For a week they get five extra periods. They use those periods to develop language skills. The dedicated and devoted teachers voluntarily work from 2 o’clock to 4 to uplift the weak children to the level of others. They work 20 days during August holidays with the G.C.E. (O/L) students and complete the syllabus before the third term. Then they do revision works and past paper discussions during the whole third term. These methods brought them a great deal of success bringing in 100% results since 2002.

Uva Science College students shone not only in their studies. They are good in extra curricular activities too. Though they do not have a well developed playground, they have done well in sports such as chess, hockey and volleyball. Three students took part in the All Island Inter School Athletics meet this year.

The folk dancing troop bagged first place at the All Island Inter-school dancing competition. (below 1000 students category)
