Colombo HA remain unbeaten

39th Junior National Hockey

Colombo Hockey Association, the overwhelming favourite, remained unbeaten in all their matches to enter the semi-finals of the 39th Junior National Hockey Championships being worked off at the Asgiriya International Stadium in Kandy.

Colombo HA ran circles round the hapless Gampaha HA defenders to win by a massive 11-0 margin. At the break the winners led by 6-0. In an all school quarter-final, Schools ‘Golds’ got the better of Schools ‘Maroons’ 2-1, after leading 1-0 at half time. Matale beat Wennappuwa 4-0 (half time 2-0) and Defence Services triumphed over Mercantile 3-1 (half time 1-1) also to enter the semis.

The line up for the semi-finals this morning will be Colombo will be pitted against Defence Services and Matale engaging School Golds. While Colombo and Schools Golds topped their respective groups after the league stage, Matale and Mercantile headed their groups after defeating Defence Services and Wennappuwa on goal difference.

Twelve teams are participating in this tournament which enters its third and final day today. The Kandy District Hockey Association, two of whose live-wires is the President R. Maheswaran and well-known coach M. Ashroff, who are hosting the event.
