All you wanted to know about laws and couldn’t afford to, free

BASL’s Law Week 2011

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL)’s Law Week 2011 exhibition intends to attract crowds with a Legal Aid clinic offering free legal advice given by eminent lawyers. The exhibition and free legal service clinics will be open to the public on November 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hulftsdorp St., Colombo 12.

A special desk will be set up to educate the public on Commercial Law. This will include procedures with regard to incorporation of companies and commencement of a new business, as well as issues and laws relating to labour, EPF, land, recovery of money, divorce and maintenance, civil, criminal, banking, fundamental rights etc. About 40 Government and private institutions will operate stalls for visitors to obtain information and assistance with regard to their queries and problems.

Some of these institutions are the Attorney General’s (AG) Department, Labour Department, Probation & Child Services Department, Employees Provident Fund, Social Services Department, Registrar of Companies and Registrar General’s Department.

Land Registry, Immigration & Emigration, Registration of Persons, Legal Aid Commission, Law Commission, Women in Need, Consumer Affairs Authority, Central Environment Authority, Pensions Dept, UDA, Bribery Commission, Foreign Employment Bureau, RMV, Colombo University’s Faculty of Law, Colombo Divisional Secretariat, National Dangerous Drugs Control, Mediation Board, Debt Reconciliation Board and Publications Bureau are also amongst the institutions.

A special awareness programme on traffic laws will be conducted by the City Traffic Police at the exhibition from 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to educate the public on newly introduced traffic laws, in a bid to reduce traffic offences and accidents. One of the key objectives of Law Week 2011 is to conduct a survey on remand prisoners in custody for over a year without any indictment, and provide the information to the AG's Dept seeking instructions, and subsequently, to keep their families informed of their status.

Branch associations of the BASL such as in Colombo, Attanagalla, Anuradhapura, Negombo, Wariyapola, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Galle, Kalutara Moneragala, Badulla, Kandy and Ratnapura will be engaged in this prison exercise, in addition to holding regional Legal Aid clinics at Avissawella, Panadura, Horana, Nugegoda, Kalutara, Polonnaruwa and Matara.

Law Week 2011 Committee Chairman U.R. De Silva and convener Mrs. Charmaine Madurasinghe request the public to call the hotline 0727 660 660 with regard to their concerns, and avail themselves of the opportunity to obtain free advice and assistance at the Law Week exhibition. Admission is free.
