Retro changes at The Sandwich Factory

Stepping into ‘The Sandwich Factory’ down Wijerama Mawatha is much like stepping through a time machine- taking you back to the 1950’s. With Frank Sinatra crooning in the background, pop art, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn posters on the wall and of course, checkerboard floor tiles- you’re instantly transported to an American ‘50s diner.

The Sandwich Factory is not only about providing customers with excellent food but a fun ambiance, explains Hisham Cader, CEO and Managing Director.“Most of us here (in Sri Lanka) have seen it on TV but never had the chance to experience it. So the younger crowd feel it’s a hip place to come and hang out,” he says. “For the older crowd it’s got a nostalgic feeling. So it’s really good when the older couples come here, they like to watch the old movies and share their stories. We’ve been able to hit every demographic.”

The sandwich restaurant has only just started out with the 50’s - 60’s styled diner, there’s still a lot more in store for customers who would like to indulge in the experience. “We’re hoping to bring our custom made jukebox because we weren’t able to get it from the US- no warranties and all that.

We’re building our own touch screen one. So we’re bringing in a jukebox, gumball machine and maybe a pinball machine,” he elaborates adding that the pinball machine is an ‘iffy’ depending if space permits. Though they won’t hold back on the neon lights. “We’re playing around with ideas and we keep introducing new things.”

Of course, completing the American styled diner feel, The Sandwich Factory has also recreated some of the 60’s gastronomic experience. Recent additions to their menu include root-beer floats and recreated pastrami sandwiches.

While the diner is undergoing some retro changes, their menu has being beefed up too. Tomorrow, ( November 14), The Sandwich Factory will be launching their new health food range. The 6 new low calorie sandwiches (below 200 calories) are what weight watchers and people who are trying to lose a few pounds would be particularly interested in. Conversely, they also have a high calorie option- ‘The Godfather’ for athletes and those seeking to bulk up.

Prompted by popular request by customers due to the dismal options of healthy food available in Colombo, The Sandwich Factory has been hard at work to meet the demand. The health range menu was created with the help of Ranil Harshana- who has 14 years of experience locally and internationally in personal training, group fitness and sports conditioning. With Ranil’s input The Sandwich Factory has been able to select ingredients and ensure the ‘healthy’ factor of the sandwiches.

With an overwhelming menu of sandwiches, beverages and desserts to choose from and a unique ambiance, The Sandwich Factory is certainly a restaurant to check out.
