The Sri Lanka Cricket Umpires Association invited Dr Ajith C. S. Perera to speak on the unwritten 43rd law of cricket at a training course for future cricket umpires. Dr. Perera is one of eight persons to be recognized by the Wisden Cricketers Almanac for his many achievements and contributions to the game in many different forms.

Dr. Ajith Chryshantha Stephen Perera explaining the ethics of cricket.

As a player in the P. Sara Division One Trophy games and as an umpire who was appointed to the test panel of Cricket Umpires of Sri Lanka, Dr. Ajith Perera has gained full membership of the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers in England.

Dr. Ajith Perera has been a training instructor for umpiring and scoring, he is an examiner on cricket laws as well. As a writer he has written two books (Golden Era Of Sri Lanka Cricket and Thinking Cricket).

He was also awarded the 'Star of Asia' for the excellence in sports in 2003. Although appointed to the panel of Sri Lanka's Test umpires fate did not permit him to stand in a Test. Two days after receiving his letter of appointment and on the eve of his maiden Test, the first in the Sri Lanka-New Zealand series in 1992 a tree crashed on to his car killing his driver and leaving him a paraplegic for life.

Those who were fortunate to listen to Ajith Perera last Sunday should recognize what determination can do. Never retire if you can continue batting like this determined human being has been batting on for the past 19 years!
