High quality English education from elementary to secondary

Horizon College International (HCI), Malabe

In her publication 'The Secret of Childhood' Dr. Maria Montessori, a foremost educationist, researcher and founder of the well-known Montessori method, concluded that 'the child is a worker and a producer'.

HCI, hence, has taken the onerous duty of taking the role of a responsible facilitator in providing an excellent location, the best of resources and the most congenial environment to offer an education service from the play group to A/L, a service unmatched in Sri Lanka in quality and commitment.

HCI is a multi-cultural, multi-religious, co-ed, international private school located in the green, serene, clean and enriching environment of Malabe, away from the pollution and congestion experienced in the city, devoutly providing the child a congenial environment 'which will enable him to develop freely'(Maria Montessori)

The Management of HCI has spared no pains to do its utmost to provide the best education & facilities for its students. Now, with everything in place HCI has been confirmed as a world class institution by none other than foreign and expatriate visitors to HCI specially from the USA, the UK, Australia and Japan.

The CEO/MD of HCI, Upul Daranagama with his deep interest and commitment to education, is the brain behind this grand and innovative concept to offer the best in the field of education to bring out the latent creativity and profound intelligence of our youth in the service to the nation through a holistic philosophy of education.

His strong educational background and the wide foreign exposure he has gained is expressed in a high profile entrepreneurship which enables him to venture into diverse projects with resounding success.

His vibrant personality and incessant dynamism that drive the school to reach the lofty and ambitious heights of the stated vision and mission of HCI are supported by a well selected staff with the appropriate qualifications and experience. Steeped in cultural and spiritual values, Mr.Daranagama places great emphasis in imbibing these values in the total development of the students.
Furthermore, the years of success Mr.Daranagama has achieved as CEO/MD of Oxford College of Business, with his students earning world rewards year after year speaks well of his managerial excellence. The wealth of experience and the professionalism he has gathered over the years in the field of education enrich HCI is of no small measure.

The Principal of HCI, Mrs. Maryanne Hills, is an English Language Graduate holding a Masters Degree in Educational Management from USA .She had been the Vice Principal of Bishop's College, Colombo and the Principal of City Schools of Pakistan and the founder Principal of Regent International School in Gampaha before joining HCI.

Equipped with this wide experience and qualifications she steers confidently her diligent and committed faculty to deliver their responsibilities in the best interest of the students providing an interestingly innovative and modern teaching methods in small groups of students not exceeding twenty-five per classroom.

Mrs. Hills is not only an erudite leader, but also a strict disciplinarian who believes that well-defined codes of conduct, morals, ethics & manners should be instilled in students.
HCI has prudently provided its students the option of following the British syllabus (Edexcel curriculum) in the English medium up to A/L .
HCI consists of three sections:

  • The Elementary Section
  • The Primary Section
  • The Secondary Section

The curriculum of the Elementary Section is a well-balanced one comprising of the best practices derived from Montessori and modern Pre-school methods.

The Primary and Secondary Sections of HCI offer a broad and well-structured British curriculum with strong emphasis given to the areas of creativity, excellence and enjoyment.

The Primary Section is equipped with a modern library, a science laboratory, computer lab, speech lab, music room, drama room, swimming pool, IT facilities and beautifully landscaped play areas which are some of the special features of the school.

The primary focus of the Secondary Section is on promoting academic excellence balanced with creative and expressive arts.

The Secondary section provides the ideal environment where students learn to appreciate cultures and relationships while acquiring a greater independence of thought and action.

In addition to this, the school offers a wide range of sporting and cultural co-curricular activities with a broad array of residential expeditions and trips for students to develop leadership, interpersonal and interactive skills whilst providing opportunities for active community services.

HCI is a great meeting place for many expatriate families to make friends which will lead to long lasting and endearing relationships.

The healthy and stimulating environment at HCI promotes wellness, embraces nature and inspires the child's natural desire to learn with love, explore with wonder and develop to the fullest potential.
By introducing them to the joys of learning and experiences of the multicultural world around them, HCI will create a community of young people who act as responsible and contributing members of society- children who create a world in which kindness, generosity, compassion, peace and understanding can blossom.

As another unique feature of our concept of education Mr.Daranagama offers the students, particularly at HCI, all the encouragement to proceed for higher studies at the recently inaugurated Horizon College of Business and Technology (Horizon Campus) in the adjacent premises which is a distinct and separate institute.

Horizon Campus is a private limited liability venture incorporated under the Companies Act of Sri Lanka which has received the approval of the Board of Investment (BOI), an autonomous statutory body constituted under Law No.4 of 1978 of the Government of Sri Lanka.

Equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities, comfortable lecture halls, IT labs, a well-stocked library, highly qualified and experienced faculty, a sport complex and a comprehensive student support system Horizon Campus provides the ideal teaching-learning environment with a real campus style life where learning becomes a lifelong pleasure and guarantees a successful future for all its well-accomplished students.
