Education

Overseas Education - Are you getting the correct picture?

As students from a developing country, in order to conquer the job market, there is an immense competition. Each year Sri Lankan universities produce graduates who are equally qualified and talented. Therefore it has become a difficult task to distinguish yourself from the rest.
It is a well known fact that having a tertiary education from an overseas institution can broaden your horizons considerably. It gives you a valuable experience of being educated in establishments that have more facilities and can offer a multi-cultural environment. This will make you become a more academically qualified person and consequently give an edge in the job market.

For many years students from Sri Lanka have been proceeding overseas for tertiary education. Those who opted for a more economical approach, favoured countries like India, China, Nepal, and Singapore, countries of the former Russian federation or Malaysia while the children of more affluent families chose countries like UK, USA, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand as desirable destinations to complete their education. It is not the children of affluent families who have been sending students for overseas studies. Many students are from middle class families who arrange for their children to study by making many sacrifices as they know the value of a proper education for their children. Education is not about merely getting a degree printed on a piece of paper as the degree certificate. A 'degree', while definitely is an asset, would not open door for a better future by itself. Without a proper combination of education and skill development, it will be tough to compete in the job market.

Many parents and students waste their hard earned money due to misguidance in selecting the suitable education pathway. A good course leading to a degree at undergraduate or postgraduate level must lead to better skill development and an excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of the subjects to join a work force and contribute fruitfully to the work establishment and the employer. The course must make the person skilful in the area of studies. The main reason why students have failed to achieve their aspirations of a better future with a satisfying job is because many mediocre degree courses available do not give this important edge to the students.

This applies to all fields of study. Many medical graduates from foreign medical colleges are unable to pass the EPRM in Sri Lanka due to the poor quality of the courses and because their academic background and capability is inadequate to follow such a course. The same is true for many courses on offer in Sri Lanka as well. When it comes to education, the students constantly need guidance from the professionals. Especially when it comes to having higher education abroad, the stakes are high. The student does not have a chance to physically go to his desired university and inspect the curriculum nor can he afford to change the courses without heavy expenditure. Therefore, students need to get proper guidance on every aspect of a course and the provider institution before making a commitment to follow a degree. Most often paid advertisements and web sites of education institutions and affiliated organisations are glorified to such extent to attract unsuspecting students and parents that they often end up confused about the right choice. Most parents and students do not do independent verifications as to the accuracy of facts.

We at Edlocate pay a great attention in giving out correct information. We guide students and parents on course and institutional selection process and arrange to link with past students who are already studying in top notch institutions to obtain first hand information. We also arrange regular visits by university representatives to Sri Lanka and undertake school addresses and one on one interview sessions in our offices. These are the measures we have taken to ensure that students and parents receive correct information before committing to spend money and enrol in a course that will give very little or no benefit to them.

Recently, representatives from a host of Australian universities represented by Edlocate arrived in Sri Lanka and conducted personal interviews with prospective students (many came with their parents) both in Colombo and Kandy. The counsellors of Edlocate were associated with these representatives at all these interview sessions. The students and the parents got the opportunity to inspect, ask questions and decide on the most appropriate education path they should follow. With these kinds of steps, Edlocate pave way to an excellent education for the students in every step in life.

For more information and free counselling sessions please contact Edlocate on 011- 4724735 [Colombo] 812386777 [Kandy] or visit them at 79/5, Horton Place in Colombo or 752, 3/1 Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawatha, Kandy.
