By P.D. de Silva

Thanks to a captains innings by Lasith Lakshan who scored an unbeaten 142 off 101 deliveries with twenty fours and six sixes, St. Thomas’ College Matara scored a thrilling two wicket win over much fancied Ananda College Colombo in their under 15 Div 1 second round game played at the Sanath Jayasuriya Stadium, Matara.

On winning the toss Ananda skipper Lakkana Jayasekera opened the innings and made 102 off 78 deliveries. His innings contained eleven fours and five sixes. He also put on a 101 run stand for the first wicket with N.A. Francisco who scored just 20 runs of it. This effort came in just 7.4 overs.

Yet, after the fall of the opening pair the rest of the Ananda batting fell apart against the accurate off spinners of Vidath Janindu (5 for 16) who restricted the once blooming Ananda total to a manageable 190 in 42.4 overs. Besides Janindu, O.C.A. Gamage (2 for 20) too bowled well for the winners.
Ananda bowler A. Anjuka who captured 4 for 44 once saw the home team struggling at 61 for 6, but, thanks to Lakshan’s knock, they were home by two wickets in just 37.1 overs.
