Where we were and where we are now, technologically speaking

Evolution of Technological Innovations in Ancient Sri Lanka, an analytical review of well researched and documented information on technological innovations in the country by M. Asoka T. de Silva was launched at the Mahaweli Centre a few months ago.

The book is in two parts- Part 1 comprising seven chapters begins with an introduction which sets the backdrop to the implantation of an alien scientific culture in the Asian region, tracing the physiography of Sri Lanka from a geological evolutionary standpoint and then reviewing the development of technological events through the classical periods of history – the medieval, pre-colonial and late colonial eras.

The book systematically surveys advanced technological features such as iron smelting furnaces, the hydraulic civilization, the building of stupas and the traditional system of agriculture.

Part 2 of the book focuses on presentations by two scholars W.I. Siriweera and Somasiri Devendra summarizing pioneering investigations in traditional fishery and the process of ship building in Sri Lanka.

The book in hardcover is a Vijitha Yapa publication and is available in bookshops priced at Rs. 1,200.
