The importance of trees

By Wasana Thennakoon (Grade 5), Lyceum Int. School, Ratnapura

Trees are very important to us because there are trees that give us medicines, food, and there are some trees to do experiments. There are many trees like papaya, banana, coconut and many other trees.

Some people cut down trees and destroy them. If we destroy trees, animals will die because there are no foods to eat and drink. If the animals die, the earth also will be destroyed. We must plant trees and protect them. We must plant at least one tree at home.

Then we must protect it. When we protect that tree, we can get many trees. When we protect trees we can get good soil and more water. If there is hot sun for the whole month, then we can be cooler and we can get more water to drink.

My first train trip

By Nadeem Saddath (Grade 3), Trinity College, Kandy

My first train trip was from Kandy to Nanu-Oya. I went on the trip on June 18, 2011. My mother dropped me and my father at the station.

The train was crowded. An aunty offered me a seat. I thanked her. On my way to Nanu-Oya, I saw mountains, waterfalls, vegetable farms and tea estates. I could see the train engine on the curvy railroads.

The name of the train was ‘Podi Menike’. The train was very long. We went through the longest railway tunnel ‘watawata’. I saw the Mahaweli river and the ‘Ihala Kothmale’ power station.

We got down at Nanu-Oya and went to my grandfather’s place at Nuwara Eliya. I really enjoyed my trip.

My hobby

By R. Sathsarani (13 years), Dhammissara N.C., Nattandiya

Gardening is my hobby. Gardening gives us exercise for our whole body. It includes different kinds of exercises like stretching and weightlifting. I have a big garden. I have grown vegetables, fruits and flowers in my garden. I water these plants everyday. My mother and father help me in
watering, weeding and putting manure for them.

I go to my garden every morning and evening. There are flowers like roses, anthuriums, orchids, jasmine and lotus. I sell flowers and earn money. There are fruits like mango, orange, papaw, guava and water melon. We pick fruits for eating.

We pick vegetables for our lunch. So we eat fresh vegetables and fruits. I think gardening is a good and useful hobby.
