Thomian Sing-A-Long 2011 - A Resounding success

The Grand Ballroom of the Galadari Hotel was a ‘Full House’ with all tickets for the Thomian Sing-A-Long 2011 having been sold out six days before the event. Never before, commented a music lover, has so much enjoyment been packed into just four hours where never a dull moment was known.

Super Compere, Vijaya Corea who, we learnt had put it all together for the STC/OBA Special Events Team, kept everyone on the go with his inimitable style and humour while Sohan & The X’Periments got everyone singing or dancing with zeal. The evening began straightaway with lusty singing by an audience that was vying for prizes that were awarded to each member of the Best Singing Table.

The breaks were few and brief, initially being made use for the award of valuable prizes on the Business Card Draw, the Entrance Ticket Draw and the Quiz which saw an Air Ticket being won. The Baila Competition drew many to have fun while pitching their best for the prizes on offer. The winning couple and the Runners Up ended up smiling with prizes in hand while being invited to provide a demonstration of their skills at the end of it all. In the audience was a musical attraction in the shape and form of Mignonne of Jetliners fame.

Naturally, an invitation from Compere Vijaya drew her up from her table and saw her sing and sway to the strains of ‘Brown Girl in the Ring’ slap bang on the middle of the floor while the ‘Sing-A-Long’ spectators collaborated from around their tables. As the night grew older, singing gave way to dancing which saw a packed floor of merry makers, singing, dancing and clapping their hands. The air was filled with a unique sense of gladness. Ronnie Leitch stepped mike side to sing golden oldies in English, Sinhala and Hindi to the applause of one and all.

It was a night of great fellowship. It was a mix of music lovers comprising the best of society and community. This Thomian event was crowned by the presence an entire table of Bridgetines who displayed their prowess at both singing and dancing. Many Royalists were also there enjoying the camaraderie and participating in the competitions too.

With the College Song and the National Anthem signaling the finale at midnight, many were in absolutely high spirits wishing for more and expressing their heartfelt delight at all that had taken place under the banner of the ‘Thomian Sing-A-Long 2011’
