Cinnamon Workers Create own theatre dramas

Persons of the families of Puhulwella (Matara District) Cinnamon processing workers received Certificates on passing a Course in Drama conducted by Rev Father Anand of IMS, Varanasi (Benares), UP, India, last week. At the end of their course they wrote and performed two dramas of their own. The Course was organized by Wiros Lokh Institute, a charitable trust. Performances of the course produced dramas were organized by Mr Bandula Seneviratne Wickremesinghe and his son Chinthaka. Speaking to the audience gathered into the performance area in traditional style by drumming and announcements, Mr Bandula thanked Dr Darin Gunesekera, head of Wiros Lokh Institute for making this course possible.

He also traced the history of this project to create a new beginning for cinnamon to The Speaker of Parliament, Chamal Rajapakse. This Cinnamon project was a new initiative to create a New Cinnamon. These dramas celebrated this historic development.

Speakers from those involved in the drama spoke thanking Father Anand for the great care taken in instructing students on the techniques of Indian Dramatic Art, and Dr Darin Gunesekera for his concise and lucid talks on the history and the social development of Cinnamon. The audience of over 250 Puhulwella persons was very impressed by the dramas and called out that the cinnamon workers and their children write and produce more dramas in the future, using these Indian dramatic techniques.
