Matale Gold, Colombo Red joint champs

44th Schools Hockey Nationals 2011 at Matale

Matale ‘Gold’ the Matale District Combined Schools under 19 boys hockey team led by D.K. Hendeniya and Colombo Reds skippered by Chintaka Dilshan were declared joint champions at the 44th Schools Hockey Nationals 2011 concluded at Edward Park Matale.

The closely contested boys final ended in a scoreless draw at full time and extra ten minutes of play too failed to alter the decision. Anuruddha Herath Bandara and Bernard Sathis Kumar controlled the match with Dinesha Perera officiating as the third umpire.

Kandy Blues, the Kandy District Combined Schools under 19 team retained the girls title defeating Matale girls 2-1 in the final. At half time Kandy Blues led 1-0 with right inside Manodya Ratnayake scoring the first goal. Midway in the second session skipper Lakmini Wijesundara increased the Kandy Blues score to two goals while Sandaruwani Jayaratne netted the loser’s solitary goal shortly before the final whistle to make it 2-1.

Roshan Hemantha and P. Cramer controlled the final with Dinesh Perera as the third umpire.
This year’s schools hockey nationals conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association together with the Matale Schools Hockey Committee attracted 20 teams – 11 boys and 9 girls – including four teams (2 boys and 2 girls) from Jaffna.

Boys semi-finals: Matale Golds beat Wennappuwa 2-0 for Matale T.W. Wijeratne and D.N. Ekanayake scored a goal each. Colombo Reds beat Kandy Whitles 5-0. Tanuka Tennekoon, T. Surendran, I. Muzammil, M. Hussain and Akalanka Ishan scored a goal each for Colombo.

Girls semi-finals: Matale (Sandaruwani Jayaratne one) beat Kandy Whites 1-0; Kandy Blues (one each by Kalpani Dassanayake and Keshani Herath) beat Colombo Reds (Gayathri Mayadunne one) 2-1.In the decider for the boys third place Wennappuwa beat Kandy Whites 5-2 on penalties after a scoreless draw at full time.

Colombo Reds had the consolation of winning the girls’ third place by defeating Kandy Whites 1-0. Sanduni Gamage scored the winning goal. Quarter Finals (Boys): Colombo Reds beat Galle 1-0; Kandy Whites beat Gampaha 2-1; Matale Gold beat Matale Maroons 1-0; Wennappuwa beat Colombo Blues 5-2 on penalties.

Quarter Finals (Girls): Kandy Whites beat Jaffna (Two) 7-0; Matale beat Badulla 3-0; Kandy Bluesbeat Colombo Blues 1-0; Colombo Reds beat Jaffna (One) 3-2. - (LDC Matale)
