Bruising battle on cards as Kandy battle CH today

By Aubrey Kuruppu

Defending champions Kandy SC take on the CH & FC at Nittawela today, having quite a few problems on their plate. To begin with their outing against the Havies last Saturday didn’t turn out as expected. Beset by injuries and the ‘suspension cloud’ hovering over Saliya Kumara their captain, Kandy had to dig deep to eke out a win by a meager five points.

The situation is not much different this time around. The dashing Sanjeewa Jayasinghe is a fresh injury doubt, while Sean Wijesinghe continues his recovery. Nuwan Hettiarachchi is likely to turn out and this should give the Nittawela Club some head and lift their spirits for another battle.

Dinesh Kumara, the winger, and Dinesh Sanjeewa, the second row forward, who have crossed over will be playing against their former team-mates and this should spice up the contest. Kandy SC, which thrives on attack, had to do something alien to their nature against the Havies and defend desperately at times. With the injuries totting up, more pressure can be expected from the CH. The latter after another five point-loss to CR & FC, will be doubly keen on staying afloat. Hence, a tough bruising battle is on the cards, but Kandy, with the fire power provided by Fazil Marija, Pradeep Liyanage and Gayan Weeraratne, should pull through.

Former Kandy SC and Sri Lanka skipper Indrajith Bandaranaike will be the chief guest. A brilliant wing-three-quarter who fashioned many a victory for the Nittawela Club, Bandaranaike currently resides in Australia. Bandaranaike is adored by Kandy fans for being one of the few players to stay loyal to Kandy SC even when he had the local rugby world at his feet.

The probable line up of the Kandy SC is as follows: Kasun Yasaisuru, Damith Dissanayake, Kishore Jehan, Senaka Bandara, Dinesh Sanjeewa, Buddhike Thalagampola (Captain), Sajith Saranga, Daminda Udangamuwe, Prasad Chathuranga, Fazil Marija, Abdul Jabbar, Pradeep Liyanage, Gayan Weeraratne, Dinesh Kumar, Nuwan Hettiarachchi
