Preparing undergrads for the future

If you came by the University of Moratuwa last Thursday, you would have witnessed more than 600 students all dressed up and about to face their very first interview. That is the very core of ‘Are You Ready?’ a career fair at the University of Moratuwa

The programme is the official career fair at the University of Moratuwa and began in 1998 by the Rotaract Club of the University of Moratuwa in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Colombo West. Since then the Career Guidance Unit of the University of Moratuwa joined hands to make “Are You Ready?” the official career fair at the university.

The project with its humble beginning of less than 10 companies and 140 students has become a venture of over 50 companies and 500 students from all faculties of University of Moratuwa. “Are You Ready?” has laid the foundation for other universities to organize similar careers fairs in their respective universities.

Over the years the programme has evolved with ever changing requirements of the corporate world for graduates. Sessions were modified, scrapped and added to offer a better programme every year.
This year’s programme was deployed during the last week. Through its sessions, the undergraduates were given an insight into expectations of the corporate world in terms of interviews, career progression and personal branding. Most importantly, they got the opportunity to be interviewed by some giants in the industry.

The most important session was the Flagship Day where Company officials from 51 companies conducted interviews, for the passing out batch of the university. Around 1000 interviews were conducted during the day. The chief guest at the programme, the Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa, Deshamanya Dr. Roland Silva was very impressed by the programme and shared his thoughts with the students. Distinguished guests present included Vice Chancellor, Prof Malik Ranasinghe, Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof Niranjan Gunawardena, Dean- Faculty of Engineering Prof. UGA Puswewala and Chairmen of DIMO, Ranjith Pandithage.
