The floor area of the building at Malalasekera Mawatha would be 40,000 sq ft. Johnston Fernando, Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade laid the foundation stone for the new headquarters last week.

Speaking at the occasion, Sujeewa Mudalige, President, ICASL said that the project would be completed by 18 months and once it is completed they aim to provide better and enhanced facilities to its 36,000 students and 4200 members.

He said that this national accounting body celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009 and the institute not only wants to make its locally but also globally as these qualifications have also been recognized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales.

He said that todays chartered accountants have a responsibility to future generations to help shape both their profession and the Institute. Minister Johnson said that accountants render a valuable service and make an important contribution to enhance the financial services of the country.

He said that though ICASL is a state (assisted) institution the government does not have the burden of financing its activities because the Institute does a tremendous service in this sphere as well as the financial management of the country through their well trained accountants. He indicated his appreciation for handling this building project through the profits of the Institute without burdening the government.
