Science Test for Kingswood

Season’s Giant killers Science College edged out much fancied Kingswood College by 20 Points (1 Goal, 2 Tries, 1 Penalty) to 19 Points (2 Goals, 1 Try) win in their Singer League under 20 rugby encounter played at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

At the short breather Science led 8-0

The game was played at a hectic pace with Science dominating proceedings in the initial half. Their three quarters were in top form not only running the ball down their line but also with some superb cover tackles which kept the Kingswoodians away from scoring. In the loose it was Kingswood who had the better of the exchanges.

Kingswood took too much time to settle paid them costly. They re-grouped and came back well within winning ranges but ran out of time later in the second half. With this game Science College who moved in to top division after some hard work registered their second win in 5 games.

Kingswood missed an easy penalty in the 11th minute of the game by Full Back T M Weerasinghe. Science drew first blood in the 24th minute of the game when full Back Ashan Malik was on target with a penalty kick at goal. Four minutes later through a forwards rush burly number 8 Nimesh Kaluwithrane brushed aside a defender to score an unconverted try to take “Lemons” at 8-0.

After the turn around Nimesh Kaluwithrane crashed through the shell-shocked Kingswood defense to score his second try of the game. Ashan Malik was on target with the conversion to take a 15-0 lead. Kingswood came back hard and reduced the lead through a superb running try by Full Back T M Weerasinghe who converted to cut the deficit 15-7. With the game played at a very high speed, players from both sides lost their tempers which ended in U D Bandara of Kingswood being “Yellow Carded” for a high Tackle. Despite being one player less The Randles Hill school hit back through a superb three quarter try by centre B O Perera to cut the deficit to 3 points.

Science had other ideas when replacement Centre B O Chamath ran circles around the Kingswood defence to touch down to score an unconverted try to take lead at 20-12. Kingswood who ran out of time scored during the last minute of play through Centre Niroshan Jayasinghe who converted by him self only to loose to Science by 19-20.Referee Dilroy Fernando
