My hobby

By Janani Samarawikrama (Grade 7), Malwaththawala C.C., Wellawaya

I selected reading as my hobby. It has many advantages. We can learn a lot about this hobby. It is fun. We can cultivate the habit by reading small books at first. After that we can read bigger and more advanced books. We can also read newspapers.

Everybody can read books. If people read, they will get new ideas and then they can develop the world. We can use dictionaries to learn new words.

There is a great saying ‘Reading maketh a full man’. There are text books which are used in schools. We can visit libraries to read books. Library is a place where books are kept.

We read in the books many important and useful facts and improve our English language too. Reading books helps students in numerous ways to improve their knowledge. I think the most useful
pastime is reading.

My class trip to Pinnawela

By Mihin Ambanpola (Year 4), Colombo Int. School, Kandy

I woke up in a happy mood to go for my class trip on March 25. I ate my breakfast and went to school.
At 8.30 a.m., we got on the bus to leave for Pinnawela. Along the Kandy-Colombo road, we turned right from a junction. A board said ‘6 km to Pinnawela’ and I was so happy.

At 10 a.m., we reached Pinnawela Elephant Orphange. We got down from the bus and lined up. Then we saw the elephants crossing the road and going to the river to have a bath. After the elephants had gone we went to the entrance.

Our teacher bought us tickets. We went inside the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage Hotel. At the hotel we saw the elephants having a bath. We had to complete a worksheet. We had our snacks while looking at the elephants. After that we went to see how people make papers using elephant dung. It was an eye-catching sight as I have never seen people making papers using elephant dung.

At 1 p.m., we left for school. In the bus we sang and had lots of fun. At school our teacher gave us
bookmarks which were made of elephant dung. I felt I was lucky because I could join the class trip and learn about jumbos in the orphanage.

SLMUN

By Imra Waris (Grade 8), Brilliant Stars Int. College, Matara

The Sri Lanka Model United Nations (SLMUN) held its annual conference on the 1st to the 3rd of August, 2010. The school teenagers participating in this conference were called delegates of SLMUN. At this conference they discuss topics like security issues, global warming, peace keeping
missions and so on.

I was very lucky to participate in this conference at Waters Edge in Battaramulla. This was my first
experience in participating in a conference like this. There were three committees in the General Assembly. I was in the GA1 committee. In GA1 there were two delegates representing one
country. I was representing the member state of Albania with a friend of mine. From this I got the chance to collect information about Albania.

In this conference we discuss the problems and take solutions to the problems of each and every member state of the UN. I also got to know about many different countries. I met many friends from different places. The third day there was a drama. Our principal made a speech. Awards were given to the best delegates. I got a certificate too. I am very happy to join this SLMUN conference. This was a big experience for me.

If I was SpongeBob

By Jody Mentet (9 years), Gateway Collge, Kandy

I wish I was Spongebob. I could learn to drive with Mrs. Puff. I could eat Krabby patties everyday. I don’t need to go to the sea and look for jellyfish. I just can go to jellyfish field. Every day at 9. 30 p.m., I watch Spongebob Squarepants. I wish I could be Spongebob.

The day I lost my brand new watch

By Zainab Sabri (12 years), Kandy Girls’ High School

It was 7 a.m., when I got ready to go to school. Something was missing that I wear to school everyday. Suddenly I realized it was my brand new watch which was given by my uncle from Japan.

I was very shocked and soon I started to search for my watch everywhere. First I searched in my cupboard, then in the drawers, on the shelf, in my school bag, even in my brother’s shorts. I searched the whole house but I couldn’t find it anywhere. So I went to school in a bad mood.

When school was over, I came home with a sad face but my mom had a big smile on her face. She said, “Have you lost your watch?” I was upset. Then my mom got something from her pocket. What a surprise! It was my brand new watch. My mom said it was hanging on my night dress.

Then only I remembered that I put my watch in my nightdress pocket last night while I was watching a film.

My trip to Malaysia

By Dayan Samarasinghe (9 years), S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia

I went to Malaysia during the April holidays. I went with my family. We took Malaysian Airlines. Malaysia is a clean and beautiful country. The capital of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur. The national flower is the shoe-flower and the national bird is the grey eagle. Malaysia is close to Singapore and Thailand. There are many Malay people and Tamils there.

The place I enjoyed the most was Genting Highlands. We stayed at First World Hotel of Genting Highlands. We went there in a cable car. I enjoyed the theme parks at Genting Highlands.

We went to the Batu caves, which has a kovil of God Murugan. We visited the KL Tower, Petronas Twin Towers, KL’s History Museum, National Mosque, National Monument and the Royal Palace.

We did most of our shopping at KL centre, China Town, Central Market and at Mydin Shopping Mall. We went to the Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple at Centur city. We ate Thai food, Indian food and Chinese food in Malaysia. We came back to Sri Lanka after a five day stay in Malaysia. I enjoyed my trip to Malaysia very much.
