From Rest House to ‘The Safari’

One time popular Tissa Rest House in the Southern city of Tissamaharama, is now a luxury star class hotel. After months of refurbishing programme, the transformation has been completed early this month. The Safari, Tissa is now ready with full bloom to give the travellers a taste of real Sri Lankan hospitality.
With the latest additions to the District of Hambantota, ‘The Safari’ has now become a popular choice of the travellers. Managed by Ceylon Hotel’s Corporation (CHC), ‘The Safari’ is one of the oldest, resting places on the CHC.

Originally, a Rest House of eight acre land, this pleasant two-storey structure still manages to retain its informal, intimate atmosphere despite the addition of a swimming pool, several new rooms and an in-house shop, which provides all the basic amenities as well as gift items.

The new additions to the Safari are fully automated laundry, sewerage treatment plant, fresh water softener plant and wooden pool deck The total room capacity of the ‘The Safari’ is fifty including three suites and 47 deluxe rooms upgraded with A/C, TV, mini bar, IDD facilities and piped music. All the rooms have balconies that overlook the wewa.

‘This is the only hotel which has the Sea plane landing facility just 50 meters away from the hotel / bedroom’ said Asela Karunaratne, the General Manager of the Resort ‘Gedara Wage Kema Welak’ (Home Cooked Food) is the theme of all CHC Hotels and Rest Houses.

In keeping with the theme ‘The Safari too is prepaired to serve the meal in traditional Sri Lankan way. Fully air conditioned main restaurant is overlooking the wewa, can accommodate about 100pax
The resort is maintained well, and the staff is courteous and accommodating. A play area, kids’ pool and special menus are available for children.

The restaurant also serves Western and Sri Lankan cuisine and the guests have the choice of eating inside or down by the pool. The garden has plenty to shade, most of it provided by a majestic old Bo tree. According to the Management, the kitchen has been up graded to all modern equipment and to HACCP standards.

‘Storing facilities and staff accommodation too are up graded. Fully computerized operating software system is the newsest installation and the extended car park is a new facility’ said Manager Asela.
Tissa Resort is not only a place for Sri Lankan visitors, but many foreigners too visit on their way to Yala/Kataragama or nature lovers to the popular Yala National park.

‘The Swimming pool is on a raised level that doesn’t have any obstruction for sun worshippers who want to work on their tans’ Asela said. Tissa has become a base for religious, cultural, wildlife and adventure tourism destinations of the Deep South.

Historically important Tissa is centrally located to reach out for destinations like Kataragama, Yala, Bundala, Kirinde, Thanamalwila and Hambantota ‘The excursion is a part and parcel of our package and we arrange day tours to Yala, Bundala, Kalametiya , Bandarawela , World’s End and Horton Plains or Buduruwagala . Overnight tours to Handapangala Kumana and Panama too are now possible’ he added.
