Thoughts of Easter

With bunnies, and chocolate Easter eggs appearing everywhere we spoke to a few youngsters on what they felt was the true significance behind Easter

While Easter is a special time for all Christians, many have their own significances connected to the festival. It could be children hunting for Easter eggs, or mothers making the most delicious chocolate Easter bunnies or the coming together of the family for mass. For some it is their own rediscovered faith that makes the Easter celebrations all the more special.

On this Sunday, while many Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and the fulfillment of their faith in Christ, the Mirror Magazine caught up with a few youngsters on what Easter truly means to them.

“This Sunday many of us will celebrate with coloured eggs, an obligatory church service, and a family feast. For the majority, however, the true meaning of the holiday will be lost, and we will forget the miracle responsible for the event.

Easter is about Jesus Christ’s victory over death and eternal life that’s granted to all who believe in him. Jesus said “I am the way and the truth and the life no one comes to the father but through me”. He should know. He is the only one who paid the ultimate price for us and lived to tell of it. And as for me all my Easter eggs are in the basket.”

Fallon Rozairo,25 year old stay at home mom whose world is her little baby girl Payton.

“Lent is the time that Christians prepare themselves the same way Jesus prepared himself for forty days before his suffering and death. So Christians from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday sacrifice their likings and make use of that time for charity. The way Jesus was resurrected, a victory over death, is the same way Christians become victors over the sacrifices they make that changes their lives. This is celebrated as Easter.”

Stefano Joel Anthonypillai , 20 year old student studying at the Goethe Institute.

“Easter is a day all Christians should rejoice and pray and thank the good Lord for all that he underwent to redeem all mankind. The resurrection of the Lord is true happiness for all fellow members of the community as we realize how much God loved us to sacrifice his beloved son to set mankind free from sin.”

Ashwini Monica Johanna Santiago, 23-year-old financial analyist

“I really do not know why people colour eggs and have Easter bunnies for Easter Sunday, when they should be celebrating Jesus Christ’s resurrection. In addition, Easter Sunday should be named as “Resurrection Day” as many believe at present. Well, Jesus Christ is risen which is a truth, and he reigns over all things. The main point we should think about is that whether he reigns and rules over our lives every day. If so, then the reason that Christ is risen is fulfilled. “

Lakshan Ferreira, 23 year old theology student

“Spiritually it symbolizes the belief of a living God. For me it is a celebration of the instance where so many people around the world unite under that belief. And I am not complaining about the good fun and the good times that follow.”

Sanduni Fernando, 24 year old who is currently working as a tour executive

“Easter brings the joyful news that he has risen. It gives us the spiritual power to accept discipline and make sacrifices. The resurrection gives our life meaning and direction and it gives us the chance to start over. He departed from the earth and came in to our hearts. If we take a moment to look closer, in our hearts we will find that he is alive. Let the Easter joy this year reveal the risen Christ in our hearts. “

Sherman Fernando, 22 year old management trainee
