Royal Asiatic Society 4th annual research conference

The Royal Asiatic Society RASSL will hold its 4th Annual Research Conference on March 25 and 26 at the Mahaweli Centre, No. 96 Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.

It is the largest national conference in social sciences and the humanities. This year's Research Conference in addition to other fields, is launching the first "Philosophy Studies Conference" in the country and hosting the 3rd "Sinhala Studies Conference".

The response for the conference has been encouraging with a total of over 210 papers received. Members of the public are welcome to attend by registration (contact: Tel: 011-2699249).

Programme on love, sex and marriage

An intensive programme on 'Love, sex & marriage' will be conducted by experts in sexual and reproductive health on Sunday, March 27 from 8.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. at the auditorium of the Asiri Surgical Hospital.

The resource panel comprising Family Planning and Reproductive Health Consultant Dr. Sriani Basnayake; Sexual Medicine Specialist Dr. Lasantha Malavige; and Counsellor Dr. Kumari Sellahewa will provide guidance on male and female reproductive health, honeymoon problems, common sexual problems, concerns and myths about sex and relationship issues.

Toastmasters national conference

The Toastmasters National Conference will be held on March 26 and 27 at Blue Waters, Wadduwa under the auspices of District Governor, Distinguished Toastmaster Nagaraj Rao. The two-day conference is expected to gather over 400 participants with an exciting line-up of speech contests; educational sessions and a fellowship night.

Toastmasters is a non-profit organization, dedicated to developing public speaking and leadership skills of its membership. Present in over 120 countries, Sri Lanka and India form District 82 of Toastmasters International; of which Division A, H and J are based in Sri Lanka. The conference is organized by Division A, H and J.

The theme of this year's conference is "Achieving Greatness Together". The highlight of the two day conference will be the division level international and Table Topics speech contest where nearly 72 contestants will be competing to represent Sri Lanka at the District level contest - Ovation 2011 to be held at Infosys Campus Mysore, India in May 2011.

Pera Uni Alumni Association AGM

The Annual General Meeting of the Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya (AAUP) will be held on Sunday, March 27, at 9.30 a.m. at the Arts Theatre, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya. K. M. S. Kandegedara, Commissioner General, Department of Inland Revenue, a distinguished alumnus of the University of Peradeniya, will be the Chief Guest, and Prof. S. B. S. Abayakoon, Vice-chancellor, University of Peradeniya the Guest of Honour. The AGM will be followed by lunch and fellowship at the Vice-chancellor's residence. All alumni of the University of Peradeniya are invited.

A woman’s world: Saying it in pictures

The Women and Media Collective (WMC) WMC is presenting a photography exhibition featuring the work of women photographers as part of a series of events organized to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8.

The exhibition will be at the Harold Peiris Gallery (at the Lionel Wendt) on March 26 and 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The photographers whose work will be featured are: Aamina Nizar, Adilah Ismail, Anushka Fernando, Arosha Ranasinghe, Azra Abdul Cader, DushiYanthini Kanagasabapathipillai, Gazala Anver, Himadhu Kottege, Hiranya Malwatte, Indu Bandara, Iresha Umagiliya, Keren Sadanandan, Maduri Raja, Manikya Kodithuwakku, Marisa de Silva, Naomi Fernando, Natalie Soysa, Nathali Devinka, Nihara Fernando, Piyumika Pathirana, Poornima Perera, Revati Chawla, Roshanthi Weerawardena, Rushika Silva, Shifani Reffai, Shyala Smith, Surani Bandara, Tehani Ariyaratne, Thilina Kaushalya and Tia Goonaratna.

Lecture on the Water Falls of Sri Lanka

An illustrated lecture on the scenic beauty, location and description of Sri Lanka's waterfalls will be delivered by former District Judge, naturalist and author Sunil de Costa, on Tuesday March 22 at 6 p.m. at the Institute of Engineers (Wimalasurendra Auditorium), 120/15, Vidya Mawatha, off Wijerama Mawatha, (BMICH end), Colombo 7. The lecture is open to the public and entrance is free.

Marking Down Syndrome Day

The Kosala Dullewa Foundation together with the Rotaract District 3220 will be jointly organizing "World Down Syndrome Day Sri Lanka 2011" today, March,20 at Royal College, Colombo in order to celebrate the World Down Syndrome Day which falls tomorrow. This will be a full day event consisting of four different projects, a charity walk, a medical clinic, an art exhibition and a variety show by children with special needs.

Aquinas Walk

The Aquinas Alumni Association invites all past students to rally round their alma mater to empower their juniors and join them on the Aquinas Walk on Sunday, March 27 at 8 a.m. at the Aquinas premises.
