Annual 'star observation camp' - meridian"11 Thurstan college, colombo

The annual 'Star Observation Camp' conducted by the members of Thurstan College Astronomical Society (T.C.A.S.) will be held this year on March 1, at the school premises, commencing at 5.00 p.m. This fourth annual event concentrates mainly on the participation of Grade Nine students of Thurstan College and members of the Astronomical Societies of other invited schools.

The Chief Guest at this event will be Dr. Chandana Jayaratne. B.Sc.,Ph.D.Pg.Dip.counselling,FIP(SL),MIPC, Consultant on Astronomy and Space Science Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies, Colombo, and Senior Lecturer in Physics University of Colombo who has graciously accepted our invitation to grace the occasion with his presence.

Several leading personalities of the Astronomical Society of Sri Lanka will deliver talks on the intricacies of Star Observation. There will also be a short training session on star map-reading and on the construction of a telescope, followed by a competition among schools to judge the best schools in star map-reading and the schools producing telescopes with the ividest range of sight. Valuable prizes will be awarded to the winning schools.

There will also be several 'games of fun' and 'quizzes' to keep the participants interested such as the launching of a 'Water Rocket' by the members of the Astronomical Society of Thurstan College, towards the end of the proceedings. 'Wisdom through the Universe' has been the theme of the T.C.A.S. since its inauguration in 2008 and has been one of the leading societies of the school ever since. During the past three years, in addition to conducting the annual Astronomical Observation Camp, the T. C. A. S. has also held several programmes for its members with a view to enhancing their knowledge and interest in reading 'Star' maps, the History of Astronomy and basic Astrophysics.

Mr. Asitha Samarawickrema, the master-in-charge of the T.C.A.S., has always been a sincere guide, counsellor and a source of great inspiration to the members of the T.C.A.S., the President, Master Chamodh Jayasuriya, and other senior members. The Principal, Mr. Y. A. N. D. Yapa, has at all times encouraged and guided' the members with his valuable advice.

We think, we agree, we do, as one! This is the key to the success of the T. C. A. S..! We proudly say that today the T. C. A. S. is certainly one of the leading Astronomical Societies among schools. Be a part of the annual 'Star Observation Camp' conducted by T. C. A. S.
