Malik claims double standards in SLRFU dealing with club players

By Aubrey Kuruppu

Former President of the SLRFU and Trustee of the champion Kandy Sports Club Malik Samarawickrema is an angry man. His contention is that the affairs of the SLRFU are not being handled properly and that double standards seem to operate in dealing with club players.

Kandy SC turned the corner in the early 1990s and ever since, has been the team to beat. Earlier it was the CH that provided the stiffest opposition, next it was the CR and right now it is the Navy.
In lighter vein, it can be said that Malik is not unfamiliar with opposition leaders!

Malik who has nursed innumerably Kandy SC players to glory and stardom, laments the fact that a couple of his top players are being lured away by other teams.

Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte was elected President of Kandy SC for the 17th time at its annual general meeting held at Nittawela. Leslie de Zoysa, who has a near four decade record of service, Lasantha Wijesuriya, Kapila de Silva and Nihal Ratnayake inter alia.Malik was especially happy about the players who had turned their back on various offers, enticements and blandishments to remain loyal to the champion Nittawela Club.

Versatile Saliya Kumara will lead the team this season and with most of last year’s players available, another triumphant march camnot be ruled out.
