Animal slaughter within kovil precincts
By Augustine Fernando

The private plaint filed against two trustees of the Sri Bhadrakali Amman Kovil in Munneswaran, under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance and the Butchers Ordinance, which came up in the Chilaw Magistrate’s Court on January 25, was postponed to April 26.

Counsel for the Respondents stated that charges of this nature cannot be maintained and that he will be raising a preliminary objection. Counsel for the Plaintiff, Harshana Nanayakkara,, along with Nihal Sumanadeera, instructed by Lakshman Wewalwala, submitted to court that, that was a baseless argument and that he will reply when the case is next taken up on April 26.

The private plaint was filed by animal rights activist Lalani Perera, consequent to the mass slaughter of animals in August last year during the Kovil’s annual festival.
